King Dedede: Friend or Foe? (YB's VG Discussion 1/21/14)

Kirby's Dreamland 2, 3, and Crystal Shards all follow the very same formula, only with a twist. King Dedede is possessed by Dark Matter when he fights you. Said formula goes the same as Kirby's Adventure upon defeating him. The Crystal Shards plays out a bit different however. The King actually becomes a fair ally to the player(its unknown if he is doing this from gratitude or his own personal gain). This game is the first to show an even more elaborate side of Dedede.
Kirby Superstar/Kirby Superstar Ultra put King Dedede back in the enemy position, where he once again stole the food from the popstar's people in Spring Breeze. Ultra even brought up a sequel to this called Revenge of the King. This remarkably showed King Dedede's evil intent, but that doesn't mean the King is really an evil being.
Kirby Squeak Squad brought King Dedede back as a boss, only he was the first boss. Kirby had assumed that his cake was stolen by him. After defeating Dedede, it turns out that the cake was really stolen by the squeaks. This did show that the King and Kirby were not on good terms, seeing as the King attacked Kirby for intruding his castle uninvited. The foe v.s foe relationship started becoming a rivalry at this point.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl really brought out his colors. He started off as a simple pawn in Ganondorf's plan, collecting the roster. He was silly rather than a true villain in his prime. After being revived by Kirby, he greatly thanked him with hugs and pats on the back. Kirby's Return to Dreamland brought back the rivalry aspect, but only at the beginning of the game. The King actually becomes a full fledged member of Kirby's team after making a pact to help Magalor repair the Lor Starcutter(a rather nice deed).
The next point contains spoilers for Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
