King Dedede: Friend or Foe? (YB's VG Discussion 1/21/14)

Image King Dedede. The primary antagonist of the Kirby series, or so he appears to be. Lets look back at Kirby's Dream Land. King Dedede, for one of the very few times, was the main antagonist of the game. However, following Kirby's Adventure, he was only the secondary antagonist, but not that even. Upon defeating him, it turns out that he took the star rod off of the Fountain of Dreams to protect it from Nightmare(without realizing that nobody would be able to dream without it). He even helps Kirby in the end.

Kirby's Dreamland 2, 3, and Crystal Shards all follow the very same formula, only with a twist. King Dedede is possessed by Dark Matter when he fights you. Said formula goes the same as Kirby's Adventure upon defeating him. The Crystal Shards plays out a bit different however. The King actually becomes a fair ally to the player(its unknown if he is doing this from gratitude or his own personal gain). This game is the first to show an even more elaborate side of Dedede.

Kirby Superstar/Kirby Superstar Ultra put King Dedede back in the enemy position, where he once again stole the food from the popstar's people in Spring Breeze. Ultra even brought up a sequel to this called Revenge of the King. This remarkably showed King Dedede's evil intent, but that doesn't mean the King is really an evil being.

Kirby Squeak Squad brought King Dedede back as a boss, only he was the first boss. Kirby had assumed that his cake was stolen by him. After defeating Dedede, it turns out that the cake was really stolen by the squeaks. This did show that the King and Kirby were not on good terms, seeing as the King attacked Kirby for intruding his castle uninvited. The foe v.s foe relationship started becoming a rivalry at this point.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl really brought out his colors. He started off as a simple pawn in Ganondorf's plan, collecting the roster. He was silly rather than a true villain in his prime. After being revived by Kirby, he greatly thanked him with hugs and pats on the back. Kirby's Return to Dreamland brought back the rivalry aspect, but only at the beginning of the game. The King actually becomes a full fledged member of Kirby's team after making a pact to help Magalor repair the Lor Starcutter(a rather nice deed).

The next point contains spoilers for Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
Spoiler: show
King Dedede was captured by a new enemy and Kirby goes to save him. He is forced to battle Kirby(while possessed) in Level 6 of the game. Somehow you can even unlock Dedede as a playable for extra mode.
So, what do you guys think? Is Dedede is bad guy, a good guy, or both? Comment you opinion.

I don't really consider Dedede to be a villain in any game, but he is definitely greedy and antagonistic. Although he plays the part of the antagonist in Super Star Ultra's Revenge of the King, he is clearly portrayed as sympathetic in the final stage, similarly to Meta Knight and his henchmen in Revenge of Meta Knight, which this episode parallels, of course. In other games, he's either possessed or misunderstood, and definitely not any kind of antagonist.

Nah I watched that, but he wasn't really the villain in that anyways (Nightmare was). Besides, it's not canon to the games anyways.

Well, in the vast majority of Kirby games where he plays a villainous role he is either being possessed/controlled by some greater villian or simply being misunderstood by Kirby. There's a few games that are a exception, but as a whole I find it hard to call him a villain in the traditional manner.

He seems to be more of a selfish goofball than everything else. He doesn't seem to pose a real threat
