Master Plan

Here's some storyline for ya'll.
Spoiler: show
Peach's Diary:
July 26th:
Today I recieved a letter from Bowser. I don't really want to believe what he wrote in it. It's terrifying and I hope he won't do it. But if he does, the whole Kingdom will be in great danger.
I just noiced: Why would he tell me this? To prepare? Is he playing with the whole Kingdom? Or is he fooling all of us? Please let it be the last option!
Nevertheless I'll inform Mario about the circumstances tomorrow.

July 27th:
I couldn't find Mario anywhere. Maybe he and Luigi are on vacation or at work. Yeah, I think he said something about vacation a few days ago. I just hope he returns soon, as this might be the end of the Kingdom as we know it.

July 29th:
From my Palace I've seen airships flying towards the Blocklands. I informed the king of the island so he could evacuate it. I really hope he got everyon off the island in time.

The airships are bombarding the island with everything now: Troops, ammonition and more! I think I even saw a creature I've never seen before draw circles above the island. What is Bowser up to? I hope Mario comes back soon. I need his assistance.

August 1st:
Nothing happened the past days. It seems like the airships remained on the Blocklands after the bombardement three days ago. That's weird.

Mario just sent me a letter that he'll return from his vacation in five days. I really hope it won't be too late for us when he returns.

I can see the airships back in the sky. They're heading for the Mushroom Kingdom. Just now I noticed another bunch of airships over the Rocky Mountains. What is happening?

August 2nd:
From my palace's window I saw the airships above Toad Town. The odd thing is that they didn't do much. They've bombarded the town a little bit, but it was nothing compared to the other invasions I saw.

They're gone! I don't know what they wanted, but appearently it wasn't an attack meant to destroy the entire Kingdom.
I'll start ordering repair in Toad Town tomorrow.

August 5th:
Toadsworth and me found a crashed airship while walking around in the park. We didn't know what to do with it, since it might be a bomb or a bunch of Bowser's troops waiting for a fool to set them free. The technology also seemed a little bit odd. I don't know when Bowser started using a flexible material on his airships, but appearently it helps against counterattacks. Is that the new technology he was talking about in his letter? Not really overwhelming, but the thought of there being more new technology gives me the chills.

Tomorrow Mario'll return and I can explain all this to him.

August 6th:
Mario is finally back. I've explained everything to him and told him to look if anything has happened to the areas Bowser attacked. I gave him a map so he could have a look where Bowser terrorized the people.

There's another thing I've noticed: A few of the houses in Toad Town are now home to ... weird pipes. They look like normal pipes at frist but seem to be portals. I wonder where they lead.

Let's hope Mario finds out what happened and if he gets to know more about Bowser's plan he mentioned in the letter.
This'll be the worlds. They don't spell MASTER PLAN at all ;D
Spoiler: show
W0 - Mushroom Kingdom (Grassland, Peaceful)
W1 - Abandoned Blocklands (Grassland, Water)

W2 - Sandy Canyon (Desert, Canyon)
W3 - Toadwood Forest (Forest, Ghost)
W4 - Eternal Glacier (Snow, Ice)
W5 - Rocky Mountains (Mountain, Sky)
W6 - Painful Volcano (Cave, Lava)
WD - Lightless Dimension (Dark, Bizarre)
WF - Afterlife Showdown (Light, Final)
WS - Nocturnal Shrine (Special, Final)
Worlds 1-6 have 3 levels and 1 castle from each theme, 1 city and 1 bonus level. I didn't decide about the others yet.
Levels and castles each have 3 secret stars, towns have one.
Luigi is unlockable.
Alright, now shit's getting serious. Here's what everyone's judging everything from: Screenies :O

But wait! Something's missing! How do you know how far I am? Well, open this spoiler to know more about the progress of this project:
Spoiler: show
Now, since I won't visit you guys every day to inform you about minor changes made to this project, and most of this project's progress will be visible over at my youtube channel, I'll leave you with Jan 20's progress for now:
Hub finished, might be altered
5 Level for World 1 finished, 1 in progress, aiming at finishing it this week. Then it's time for castles and towns!
World Map for World 1 done.
There are a few more levels I have in the works which might be built to adapt to the guidlines of this project.
The changelog will not be updated every week or month, so the safest thing to do is to go to my youtube channel and check if I posted the preview for a new level. http://youtube.com/LayerMM12P

HOLY SHIT.

Anyways, on topic, good to see this project is back. I was assumed it had ended after you left Knux. Sad, because it looked really awesome. I expect great things from this, Sceptrum/Emral.

This is looking really great. The world map is flawless, just flawless. All the levels are equally awesome, but my favorite is probably the blue woodland level, it's looking pretty awesome and the bonus area-ish one has some really kickass graphics. All your screens seem to lack enemies though, but I guess it's fine since they all are from World 1. You know, I've always liked your levels but the screens tell me that you've become even better at this. The effort you put on each level can easily be seen. So I guess I finally found myself an episode to look forward to :o Keep up the good work and best of the luck!

Didn't work on this from July til December actually :P

I know you!

Blue Block Way is marked as World 1 Theme 1 Level 1 btw so it won't take long to get to this level, considering you feel like playing it in the normal game rather than the level cheatitor.

Now, I don't think there's a lack of enemies in the levels, given that I take the screens at spots focusing more on the environment and the way it's built, but yes, some screens do have only 1 or 2 enemies which might not be much. I'm particularily against the "more enemies = greater difficulty" mentality and try to work my way around it to provide puzzling areas, branching paths, trying to make it difficult to find all 3 stars and proceed to the next world in the first place (although I might change the stars-for-world mechanic and replace it with something new and have the stars for more important things (you know, SM3DW style kinda)). To wrap this up: Most of the screens have been taken in inconvenient places for a review on enemy placement. Also, just wait until you play the water levels! People complained about my underwater enemy spam (while I find it easy to memorize the patterns and avoid getting hit)!!!

Ignore the dragon coin. That's from the version i submitted to knux's 7 months ago. There won't be any dragon coins in this episode.

Also, whoever liked Fire Flower Valley will probably like the level I'm currently working at. It reuses the music and 2 self-made tilesets.

It's a very original idea to have a world map look like the levels, like in NSMBWii. I'd add some scenery though. Good luck!

You've kinda destroyed your own argument in this sentence.
Making something like in NSMBW, which was not my intention in the first place, is as far away from original as it gets. It might be that it hasn't been seen in SMBX yet, but that doesn't make it original.

Let's just pretend I tilted the screen 90° for this section ;)

Shipwreck Shore is finished!
Edit²:
Here's Checkerboard Castle. I tried to make it look more like an actual castle and less like a scrambled mess of rooms.

Not a whole lot of time until I'll release a demo including World 1's contents! Stay tuned!

Gosh, Emral, stop telling them everything.
I'm currently mid-progress through the Bonus Level for World 1 and ready to present to you what it'll look like:
Spoiler: show
Image
So here's the thing: Bonus Levels require a secret exit in order to be found and contain 5 stars each. They don't have any exit other than the warp you entered it from and each star is guarded by a different type of enemy. Considering there are quite a few different enemy AI's in the game and I can mix something up (Shy Guys + Snifits, Koopas & Beach Koopas, etc), I can present 50 different challenges to you (5 stars * number of worlds). The World 1 ones will include some of the most basic enemies there are and some gimmicks found in other levels of the world. World 2's secret level will probably revolve more around the different environments I can use. Anyways, what do you think? This is also officially the second to last level before I'll modify the game to be properly designed for the demo 1. The last level'd be 1-B-4 - ??? (Submerged Castle Level if you know what I mean)

Anyways, that's it from me for today. Screens will be updated once the demo is out.

Speaking of enemy AI, that's something I'd like to warn you about. FotMK didn't have any introduction of enemy AI past the first two or three worlds - the last levels were just filled with the same AI that had been already used.

You do realize that I've made several Pre-W3-Cancelled projects since FotMK and learned from that? Just don't freak out. I know what I'm doing and I won't spam goombas all over the place in World 8. Or will I?

I'll try to impliment custom 3-HP Boss fights, yes.
Edit:
Finally got this bitch of a tileset finished.
1-B-4, the Water Temple (original name pending), will be the final level of World 1 and last level I have to build until I can hand out a demo version. The tileset is rather big, having 72 16x16 tiles, some of them merging into 32x32 ones (all calculated in 1x1 pixels), and a boss door.
ImageImage
This is the boss door in it's original size (200% for smbx) (mario for scale)

This level will impliment the change of the water level, kinda like the water temple from OoT.
Still thinking of the boss, but one of the tiles I made gave me an idea...

Ahoy thar'! Time to take a look at this! I shall give the negatives first, simply because I put it first, and don't feel like moving it. If you'd like to hear the good news, then open the other spoiler first, if you wish.
Spoiler: show
I don't believe the story. I like that it's less of Peach getting kidnapped, but I don't believe she would send Mario out to beat up Bowser just because everyone's scared. Is this a major threat? No, sounds like Peach is simply overreacting. If Bowser actually DID something, it would be much more believable.

I also noticed you used the SMW paths instead of the SMB3 paths you can get in the SMBX GFX Pack by Red Yoshi and Supermarioman, and I personally think that SMW's lax style of shading compared to SMB3 just looks... off. At least to me.

Also, first screenshot in the first post: The underground SMB1 area. The lamps have no outline at all, which looks strange considering the pipes, bricks, and even the overworld blocks have SOME outlining, and what is up with that water bubble on the ground?
Image

Fourth screen! (the second on the right side.) I don't understand what's up with those green flowers. I think they are a background, which explains why there are 3 of them in a screenshot, but their shading is odd. Like, in the petals of the flowers, the lighter part of the shading seems sorta blocky, and I'd expect a flower to be shaded to look rounder. Especially a tulip-SMW style flower.

The seventh screen (fourth on the left side) makes me feel high. I think it's the rotated "?"s, but nonetheless, I feel like Mario should hold back a tad on the mushrooms for this level. The ? coins look... bland. Maybe if you put a similar shading to the ? on the coins as with the shading of the ? on the blocks, it will look less bland? The parts in the tileset made to look like giant brick blocks also look spammed on the left side. ALSO, there's a tile error in the level, not sure if you noticed it or not. Here's a picture I shall show you of the error.
Image
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now this is a pretty negative statement of my opinions so far, but now for what I like about this!
Spoiler: show
As I said, while I don't believe the story too much, I am sort of glad you didn't go with the common "Peach Stereotype," as I call it.

I like the concept of the mushroom house in the second area! But to be honest, I think the mushroom's "cap" is a little low. Maybe use the little space below the actual room?

I like the last screen (the last screen on the right side), and the fact that it's home to underwater ruins! I just love to do adventurous things like that!

The screen above it (second lowest screen on the right side) is also cool! The idea of upside down water fails to abide to Physics, therefore it MUST be a Mario-themed level! :P ok not really... But I have to say, I did notice an error with the tiles...
Image

I also like the 6th screen (3rd on the right), because it gives me a sort of outdoors feeling, like a summer kind of thing. I also like the idea of certain patches of grass being darker or more life-ridden than other patches of grass. I dunno, it just gives me a more outdoorsy feeling.
Another thing, and this might just be me: I absolutely HATE transparent water (ironic, seeing as I am a pirate)! Everything behind the water looks clashy because the transparent water warps the colors to a point where it's the first thing I notice in any observation. To me, it's as if you completely took out the mask! But this may just be me.

This feels like it took FOREVER to type.

I think I didn't elaborate on this well enough. Bowser performed an airship strike on the kingdom and peach sent out mario to scout if bowser's up to do anything evil. I shall update the story spoiler soon enough.
Here's an updated storyline:

CaptainCalamity wrote:SMW paths instead of the SMB3 paths
*cough* SMW-styled W2 world map planned *cough*
I might make some custom paths though which are basic enough to come in two styles. Keep in mind the world map is still beta. Considering there aren't that many tiles I can replace I might have to, sadly, rework the world map entirely.
CaptainCalamity wrote: The lamps have no outline at all, which looks strange considering the pipes, bricks, and even the overworld blocks have SOME outlining, and what is up with that water bubble on the ground?
Your image tags are broken. I can still view them though.
The water bubble is spilled water that came together in form of a bubble. You might know this from when a water drop hits your jacket and it just stays there. I know, in this size it's not very logical, but neither is flowers being the element of fire, amirite?
I think I didn't give the lamp an outline because the bricks, water and enemies don't have one either. Either that or I forgot about it. I'll have a look at how it'll look with an outline when preparing the episode for the demo and compare the two variants.
CaptainCalamity wrote: I think they are a background
Yes, they're not ripe yet, so you can't use their power. I made a similar level to this in full SMB3 style and with depressed theme back in early 2013.
CaptainCalamity wrote:but their shading is odd. Like, in the petals of the flowers, the lighter part of the shading seems sorta blocky, and I'd expect a flower to be shaded to look rounder. Especially a tulip-SMW style flower.
It's the original graphic by tulip. I might change the shading a bit, though, as it, indeed, looks kinda blocky.
CaptainCalamity wrote:there's a tile error in the level
Screen was taken before I extended the section to the top and worked on that part. Don't worry.
CaptainCalamity wrote: The ? coins look... bland
Might change them up a bit. Give them more shading and all. Considering this will most likely be a level far into the game, world 8 or something, I won't continue it for a long time, though. It's not even in the folder for the episode yet :P (so is Screen 6, but that's world 2 so yeah.)
CaptainCalamity wrote: The parts in the tileset made to look like giant brick blocks also look spammed on the left side.
I've got multiple tilesets to work with. Mixing them up a bit. Sometimes the bonus tileset is spammed, sometimes the brick block one, but overall, I think it'll make for an interesting design.
CaptainCalamity wrote:I think the mushroom's "cap" is a little low.
I copied the mushroom sprite's outline 1:1
CaptainCalamity wrote: I did notice an error with the tiles...

A lack of texture? I didn't notice that in the week I was designing this after I didn't continue this level for about half a year!!!!! HOW COULD I!!!SDFAGREG
I'll have a look at it.
CaptainCalamity wrote:absolutely HATE transparent water
You'll hate the Water Temple.

Still, thanks for all the feedback. I'm currently designing the boss for World 1's Water Temple. It's going to be HUGE, but that's all I'm gonna reveal about it.

I moved from making projects to making individual levels. I might release the levels I've done for this with time. Just letting the 5 people who care know. This can be locked if you want, staff.

You obviously have no idea how I work.
This project hasn't seen any kind of progress since almost a month.
Cry about graphics. I have half of them released and the other half will be available after ToB6.
Cry about levels. My individual releases are of higher quality than project levels.
