My top 5 would probably be:

5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
One of the best 2D platformers on the Wii and my favorite in the NSMB series, also the most innovative. The addition of 4 player co-op was amazing, and the level design was also nicely done. Plus, the return of the Koopalings.

4. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
Yeah, I actually prefer this game over Bowser's Inside Story. The best GBA game imo, I just everything about this game. The battle system, soundtrack, visuals, writing, I could go on.

3. Paper Mario
A lot of people say SPM is the most under-appreciated game in the series, but I've honestly seen more love for that game than Paper Mario 64. Being my first real RPG, PM64 is the only Mario RPG I can sit down and play for hours, and I've had the most memories with it. I've always really like the whole theme of the game, and the cardboard/paper-like visuals were so cool and something totally new at the time. I really do wish Nintendo would make another Paper Mario game similar to this one and TTYD, not that Sticker Star stuff.

2. Super Mario World
If you haven't played this game, you're missing out on one the best platformers ever made. But of course, all of you have probably played it considering we're on the SMBX forums. lol Super Mario World is simply perfect, the level design is top-notch,visuals were astounding for the time and are still appealing to this day, the soundtrack despite being one song remixed several times is surprisingly really good, Yoshi ('nuff said), and so much more. Easily the best 2D Mario.

1. Super Mario 64/Super Mario 64 DS
Many gamers say this game has aged, but I honestly don't see any problems outside of the camera issues. My first game ever and still my favorite to this day, SM64 is a game I never get tired of and the DS remake makes it even better somehow. I still go back to it from time to time to %100 it, that's something I don't do with most other games. What can I say? It's a masterpiece.

So that's my list, pretty wordy but whateves. lol (This is also my first post, couldn't find an introduction thread so I just went ahead. :D )

I have the odd feeling someone made this thread already ...

Anyway here's mine.

5. Super Mario Bros. 2 USA
Honestly I wasn't that fond of the new maneuvers Mario and company could perform. In fact, I didn't like the fact you couldn't kill enemies by jumping on them at all, which was what mainly satisfied me back then. That and killing enemies with the fire flower. I tried playing it last year I believe, and my thoughts on the game haven't changed one bit. I can compliment the music though, catchy as anybody would expect from Koji Kondo.

4. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
My very first ever played M&L installment and definitely the one that got me into the M&L series. Up until then I was used to the classic 2D-sidescrolling platformer that we all know and love, but for the first game to burst the bubble it did quite a splendid job. The music though wasn't that good. It wasn't bad, that's a given, but I do think it could've been so much better.

3. New Super Mario Bros DS
Unlike many of you, if not all of you, I've never got any console besides a Sega Genesis and a PS2 that I bought with my own money. So all of my Mario experience is based off of emulators. I could never make Wii games work properly, though, it still bugs me to this day even though it doesn't attract me that much anymore. Anyway, more into this game, I freaking love it. The bosses might not have been that good, well some of them were, but the levels more that made up to it. Having the ability to wall-jump, something that you'd think it'd kinda break the game was implemented nicely with some good level design. The music is awesome and the canons were a nice touch.

2. Mario Party Advance
Yeah yeah I know, of all the party entries I've picked probably the most rare and unfitting considering how different it is compared to the rest. But to be honest I kinda like it that way. Having locations to actually go to made it look like a more open world for me to explore, instead of the Ludo-like board games that all the other Mario Party games were. To this day it's still my favorite Mario Party game, but again, that might only be because I never got to play other games because of my lack of gaming console experience. Although I could emulate Mario Party 1, 2 & 3 on Project64 if I ever wanted to, but it just doesn't call my attention that much. That and I've heard rumors of Mario Party 3 mini-games being exhaustively long.

1. Super Mario World
Come on, were you people expecting me to put anything for my top one? I mean, just by reading this post you already know my gaming console experience was piss poor and there aren't that many games from the 16-bit era that have the guts to surpass this master piece. Everything from enemy design, level structure, cartoonish look, secrets, new worlds, everything just yells at me "PLAY ME!". Even if I don't make SMW styled levels myself you can't deny how popular this game is and for a fucking good reason, up to this day it's still my favorite 2D-sidescrolling platformer Mario title and maybe my favorite 2D-sidescrolling platformer in general. Praise it, honor it and love it as it loved you!!

Well, personally, it's one of my favorite Mario games ever, I used to play it many times back in junior high school, but to each his/her own.
Anyway, these are my top 5:

5- New Super Mario Bros. 1 (Nintendo DS): I had a lot of fun with that game, it was pretty much a combination of the 2D platforming from the old Mario games and the graphics and presentation of Super Mario 64, or the 3D Mario games.
4- Super Mario Land 2 (Game Boy): Along with the first Mario Land, this one is good old Game Boy fun. The platforming is fun, the power ups and levels are creative, and Wario's there!
3- Super Mario Bros. 2: It may not be an "official" Mario games since the real 2 was another one, but I still think it's fun, I have fond memories of playing that game when I was little. The additional characters you can play as and the picking up and throwing objects and enemies at other enemies made it even better for me.
2- A tie between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Bros. 3: Both are amazing games that are still just as fun now as they were back when they first came out. Once again, the levels and power ups are creative, the bosses are fun to beat, they're pretty long and the music is very memorable.
1- Super Mario World: The first Mario game I ever played and still the best one to me. It took everything that SMB 3 had and made it bigger and better. Also, Yoshi's first appearance, how can anyone not love that dinosaur?
