I don't really see the purpose of it, anything that belongs there fits equally well in Sandbox I think.

I don't think this would go far anyway. As soon we would do it itt would go downhill. Most members just joke around then and can't take the thread serious. This has been showed multiply times. Also i think this was sugessted earlier but the staff didn't accept the idea.

And that's where the staff should come in to make sure that the discussion stays serious.

Having a "Serious Discussion" forum insinuates that serious discussion can't already take place in the Sandbox forum, and it also implies that the discussion that takes place there isn't serious. Speaking rhetorically, are we that immature that we need to specifically sanction a place for serious discussion?

So are we talking like a debate forum or what, because I'm not sure if a serious discussion place would work on this board. It would get trashed easily.

The serious discussion section would be a place strictly for serious discussion. The staff would crack down on those who aren't serious in it. I understand Joey's vieepoint though.

It basically creates a "hey in this serious board the staff will enforce the rules and in sandbox we won't" rift, which is not at all how the staff operates.

Ok, so when I was asking for another Serious Discussion, I was really asking for a debate-type subforum. I don't think those types of precisely involved topics really belong in the sandbox, where it doesn't take as much thought and as many tears to post. From what I saw when I occasionally browsed Knux's place, sad events, current events, and debates were really all that there were in Serious Discussion.

I feel the sandbox is still sort of laid back right now, but I don't mean laid back in terms of moderation--I mean on behalf of the people who post there. That's not necessarily a bad thing, either, because you'd wanna hang out in a place in which you can sit back, relax, and compare interests, amirite? I don't really feel like debates fit in the Sandbox with the typical intense, "you just contradicted yourself," "you morons don't even know what you're talking about," "you are fundamentally evil" posts.

But "you just contradicted yourself," "you morons don't even know what you're talking about," and "you are fundamentally evil" posts don't fit anywhere!!! (please report these posts if you see them, everyone)

The sandbox forum is built so that you can discuss anything - I have no problem with more serious topics being in there with more lighthearted topics. A debate board is slightly different - I would consider this if people wanted to separate debate topics from not debate topics, but not serious topics from less serious topics.

I think it'd be better to call it a debate subforum rather than serious discussion as, like Joey said, the name would imply that other forums (namely sandbox) aren't serious.

If we do implement a debate board, I would want it to have a considerable amount of activity.

Why don't you add a debate board for a while and see how it works out? If you don't like how it operates then you can delete it.
