Cloud-Clad Treetrunks (with poll)

Postby Waddle » Sun Dec 28, 2014 1:31 pm

Hi frens!
This level actually autoscrolls, and I'm really proud of how it turned out. It's relatively short (1-2 minutes), but it should be placed in an earlier world. That's what the poll is for. If this level ever was put into my episode, what world would it be?

UNOFFICIAL REVIEW OF Cloud-Clad Treetrunks by Waddle Derp

Really awesome level! I really enjoyed this.

Design (8/10)
This was a nice autoscrolling level. Since when are the words "nice" and "autoscrolling" ever used in a sentence? However, there is one fatal design flaw. At then end there is a moving platform with a door on it, and the warp moves with the door. You're supposed to wait until the door moves under the star and then go in it to spawn on top of the star. The thing is, the warp doesn't move with the door. Luckily I was able to jump high enough to reach the star with Mario, but characters like Toad and Peach won't be able to do that. This REALLY needs fixing.

Atmosphere (10/10)
This really felt like a Kirby level. Granted, Kirby levels don't autoscroll (iirc) but the atmosphere was really there in this level. The mix of clouds and treetops was spot-on as well. The music fit, and the screen scrolled at JUST the right pace. Not too fast, not too slow. Good job, dude.

Other Comments: World 2 Difficulty =P

Overall 9/10 (The Best)
This is an amazing level aside from that one fatal design flaw. Should be expected though, cuz it's Waddle Derp :D

Level design (8.8/10)
Nice level, the doors which warped you to the place right above you were an interesting feuture. (repeating Turtwig) The door to the star needs fixing.

Atmosphere (9.4/10)
It's a nice Kirby-based level, the music couldn't be better in my opinion and the tileset fits good with it.

Overall 9.1 (the Best)
Good work!

Thanks for all the nice words ^.^
As for the door at the end, I'm sorry that happened. If you take a look at the editor, you'll see that the door warp is actually placed in the correct spot in the correct layer; it just doesn't work I guess. I'll tweak it ASAP.

I Like how you have to go through the door at a certain time to get on the moving platform.

Ehm, what.
I know you dont like me, but saying things like this doesn't help anybody. Also, I never said your design was bad, why do you keep repeating that? It's getting annoying.

Eric. I said your design wasn't very good, and maybe you should think about why I downrepped you in the first place. You always act like you know everything about designing, and you start critizing people on things you should try to improve on first. Also, I don't want to kill the mood in this thread, so I suggest we continue through PM. Also. May I remind you:

Also, I would put this between level 2-2 and 3-7

Actually, if you put a warp on a layer, but then select either end of it again using the editor hand, it will be moved back to the Default layer. In other words: no, it isn't on the correct layer. To fix this, just grab either the entrance or the exit of the warp (it doesn't matter which one), select the layer it's supposed to be on ("Right > Left" in this case), and place it back in its original position. After that, it will work.

Also, I gave you two days, and it isn't fixed yet.

@ Turtwig:

Although I agree with most of you wrote about the level, forgive me if I'm reluctant to put a level that has a "fatal design flaw" in The Best section. After all, level design is the most important part of any level, don't you think?

And now, my review:

This is a pretty good level. The auto-scroll is done well and there's even some coins and a 1-up in certain corners of the level. There's even quite a bit of variety with the enemy types used, which I don't see very often for some reason. With that said, the level is a bit too short, and would probably only work as a gimmick-introduction-level in world 1 (maybe 2). Although the door gimmick was well done for the most part, I would have liked to see more done with it; maybe have a warp at the end of the auto-scroll section that leads to another section where the player needs to use this gimmick to solve puzzles, or at least where the timing is a bit trickier. Also, the door at the end isn't on the correct layer, but you knew that already (just letting you know I'm taking off points for it).

Summary:
GOOD:
-Graphic choices are well made, though I think it's odd that even the top of the trees' foliage curves down near the trunk (no, it's not that the clouds are in front of it).
-Music choice is okay, but the machinery-beeps in the background don't really fit well with a cloud/treetop stage.
--VARIETY OF ENEMIES.
-Block, coin, power-up and background placements are well done.
-Door gimmick is a neat concept.
-No problems with the auto-scroll.

BAD:
-The level is quite short.
-Door gimmick isn't fully realized.
-The warp at the end isn't on the correct layer for whatever reason.

In conclusion:
Yeah, there isn't really much to say about this level because it's pretty short. However, the level is also pretty good for what it is, and I say that this deserves a 6.5/10.
