Sandy Cove

They're not that bad, but they're not that good either.

Sandy Cove

Postby Gameinsky » Fri Dec 26, 2014 12:59 pm

Hey, I played quite a lot of SMBX about a year ago, back when the trekweb forums were a thing.
I lost interest in SMBX, but recently I decided to redownload it.
After finding this tileset in the forums, I decided to make a level using them.
So here I present you Sandy Cove.
Spoiler: show

Consider it pretty much my first level after a year hiatus.
It's a pretty standard beach level which switches gimmicks every now and then.
It's rather short and doesn't hold any secrets, but I decided to share this anyway.
Here's the download link:

UNOFFICIAL REVIEW OF Sandy Cove by Gameinsky

This level was...rather meh, to be honest. It's pretty good considering you haven't designed in a while, though!

Design (5/10)
I suppose this is more of an atmosphere thing than a design thing but the beach sections felt too cramped and the underground sections felt too open. I had to constantly wait for the moving pipes in the overworld and I could pretty much effortlessly breeze through most of the underworld. It's all backwards, really. This level was also rather boring and uninteresting to go through. Thye moving pipes were a bit too slow, and they felt out of place. I did like the little platforming challenge you had to do to get the Ice Flower, though.

Atmosphere (6/10)
First of all let me say that the tileset for this level looks ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE (sorry Emral, I just really don't like it ;-;) Also, why are the coins blue? They don't mesh with the level. The beach atmosphere is rather nice, and the music fit in. However, the SMB2 underground background doesn't looks good when almost everything else is SMB3 themed. The digital-sounding SSBB underground music didn't fit either. LKike I said earlier, the moving pipes really didn't make sense in a beach styled level, either. Despite all this, the atmosphere was still good!

Other Comments: I couldn't get up the platforms to the Ice Flower. Yeah I suck ;-;

Overall 5.5/10 (Average)
This level was alright, but the bad kind of outweighs the good here. This level was rather bland, unnatural, and ultimately pretty strange. But it's a good first attmept since you haven't designed for a while!
