Does these functions/features actually work?

So 2 things. One in debugger and one in Level Settings tab.


Debugger: What does the Block Swap/Swap Block actually do?


Level Settings: Level Settings > Advance does copying a section from another level actually work? - I've tried soo many times but it seemed to never work for me. SMBX didn't crash or give me an error.

The Block Swap/Swap Block swaps all blocks with the given ID with another block of the given ID, and if you use so many of a block in a section and go to swap them, your game will crash, at least it does for me. And as far as I'm aware the Block Swap doesn't go by section, it replaces ALL of your blocks. The function is useless anyway.

When copying a section, all of the blocks and tiles and whatnot in that section will be misaligned by a few pixels, and the only way you'd be able to place anything new in the copied section is if you turned off auto-alignment because the misaligned section will mess with auto-alignment.

Level Settings: Yes, it does work. The Source is the one you want to copy that Section to another and the Target: is the one where you want to paste it. After that you hit the "Clone" button and then you have 2 Sections that looks the same. Be warned as of how the positioning of the Section is by the top (or maybe at the bottom if you modified a bit) as if it isn't identical it will mess up the whole positioning aswell but that will be discussed later...

I wouldn't say it is useless. Say you were making a level, then thought that maybe you should change some tiles, but the custom graphic is for a different tile and you do not want to go through replacing tiles or renaming files. That is what this function is for.

You guys misslead one the second one: Copying a section over from ANOTHER .lvl not from the same level.

The only way to do this is by copying the whole Level to a new File, rename it and edit via SMBX. You can't copy the Section to another Level File. That is impossible. Only copy the whole Level.

Even know that copying a Section to another Section isn't often used does not mean it is useless. Surely SMB2 Levels, Ghost Houses and more sometimes has this feature used and it sure is Handy to prevent time consume of making a new Section that looks identical to another Section.

You must misunderstand how the section copying actually works. You can't copy a section from one .lvl to another .lvl because all of the data for the first .lvl is stored in the files itself and not on the clipboard. The only way possible to copy a section from one .lvl to another is if you manually did it by hand, tile by tile and event by event, or if you copied the level, acquired the wanted section, and then built around that section. Although why you would want to copy a section from one level and put it into another is beyond me, it's impossible to do so.

WHY you would want to do it?? Similar like Super mario 3D land where the special World's levels wor a bit different to the original ones.

You mean the "Level Name"? That is specified for Battle Levels. And like we said before it only works for Sections only and not with Section to another Level.

That when you put your battle level in the battle folder, you have to give the level a name in order to see it in start game.

Oh...so that time when I made a Battle Level people were telling it wasn't showing in SMBX.... :/ whoops...

Actually, you'd be surprised, it's a useful tool for general level editing, but also for making really large levels, at least with a block, BGO etc counter, you can keep track of what you have left to use without causing a Run-Time Error. Otherwise it's good for keeping track of placed Dragon Coins etc. It's not perfect, but without it some people maybe a little screwed without it.

No you got mislead to. In my mane post I said Debugger: Block Swap. And there I was referring to that.

Oh sorry, you're right, I did think you meant the actual debugger. As for the Block-Swap, speaking for myself here, I've used it about 10 or so times. It works and I've only used it for purposes of custom graphics that require the same block. I'm not really sure how many people actually use it, considering it is in its own way, fairly useful. If SMBX had more features to it, it would be much more useful then, rather than how it is now. If it could be used for BGOs and NPCs as well, then it's usefulness would be maximized indefinitely.

I would so use it more than I do now (never used it once :D) if I could 'Swap' NPC's!
