I want the player to be able to see the "save and quit" and the "save and continue" options in the list of options when they pause the game mid-level. is there anyway to do this WITHOUT turning off world map?

Tecnically this isn't possible since it is already been implemented in the Game and cannot be changed in any way. Interestingly enough that in the earlier Versions you can save the game during the Level like in "Super Mario All Stars" (SNES Game) but sadly, in the more recent Versions in SMBX it is impossible to do.

Also, just for making things clear, SMBX saves the Game automatically every time when you completed a Level either if the Game has a World Map or not and even if you lose all your 1UPs (Lifes) and get to the Title Screen. If you lose at least one 1UP (life) and either reappear in the Level or a World Map it won't save automatically...

Adding to what bossedit8 wrote, if you collect an SMW star, the game is saved automatically, even though the level hasn't been beaten.

As regards the autosave, that also wasn't working until i turned the world map off. And, even though i did turn the world map off, the pause menu during levels still wasn't displaying the save and continue and the save and quit options.

First of all, you need to be in the Hub Level in order to manually Save (like where the Level is very first linked in once you start the game). Second, make sure that your linked Level inside your .wld file has ".lvl" inside "Auto Start Level" File at the end of the linked Level Name.

Here's the thing, though: even if the player COULD save during normal levels, it would be completely pointless. SMBX automatically saves whenever the player beats a level or collects a star, and that's the ONLY thing it saves, besides the player's position on the world map. The only reason "Save and Continue" is a feature is so the player doesn't have to walk all the way to the next level on the world map each time he/she gets game over (this includes linear episodes and episodes that require map-backtracking).

My point is: don't worry about it. Even if there was a way, it wouldn't be worth it because it would ultimately accomplish nothing.
