Splashy Sewers

Postby Waddle » Sun Oct 05, 2014 4:01 am

Hi guys!
waddle derp here, with my latest (and my favourite) level! Okay, so Splashy Sewers is a non-linear switch puzzle level (woohoo, that sounds inviting) made of wood blocks, inspired by a level in The Invasion (1), except this time, it actually looks okay. Screens:
Spoiler: show

The level has 2 stars, A little boss-fight, and some bonuses. Music:
Spoiler: show
DKCR: wonky waterway
DKCR: subruins
PMST: Mini-boss
Download:

I was in a hurry when I posted this. It can be locked until I update it. Sorry, I'm a Derp.

@Waddle Derp: Well, it happens.

I do like the look of it on your screenshots. I really do but what I personally do not like is how the background blocks are in the foreground of the waterfall which to me it looks kind of unnatural.

Since this Level does not have a Download Link provided, I am gonna lock this for now. If you have a working download link, send me or another Mod to unlock this Topic for you.

@bossedit8's Review - Splashy Sewers - Created by @Waddle Derp

Design Usage:
One nice designed SMB3 Sewer Level which in my opinion is more Pipe based like in SMB3 itself and what you have mentioned, The Invasion Episodes. At the beginning where you Start we already see the Halfway Point up to the left which in my opinion is strange since not only that it is obvious where it is now located in your Level but if you are playing this Level in 2 Player Mode (which by the way is "sadly" a rarety use in SMBX) you can pretty much be already Halfway done with this Level with no problems. I do like your details inside the wooden Blocks like some of them are bigger than the rest. Very nice touch. I also like how you used the whole background objects with the whole darker wooden Blocks and Waterfall which was also very nice but while I saw that some of them do merge eachother that the Waterfall is more in the back than the whole wooden Blocks that is more in the front as I have mentioned before is kind of illogical since the Waterfall is more brighter than the darker wooden Blocks so normally the darker ones are more in the back while the brighter ones are more in the front. What I also do not like is how the Water at the very bottom is not swimable which normally you should can in SMB3 but that is excuseable since the water is way at the bottom so it is more like hidden and also unswimable. There are certain Areas where you can see 2 pathways at the sametime during exploring which could be ok but the problem is that you can actually jump up if you know how to perform it (you can see it in my Video Playthrough how I did it) and actually get those Rooms earlier on. Also, there are Areas where you can Glitch through tiny holes (again, in my Video Playthrough) if you are doing this correctly. I know that I am the (only) one who discovers Glitches like that and it isn't 100% necessary to remove them but just to point out these kind of Glitches during my playthrough. There are holes that are surely huge to pass over... definetly not completly suitable for an earlier World type Game like World 2 or somewhere near. There are multiple Switches to bypass the Level and the fact that you also visit an Area where you already have been was a nice concept, even know that it is just the samething but something happened at the earlier Rooms but that wasn't all that bad either. There is one secret Room where you can get a Star which was good how you placed out like that and the cleverness of how to even get to it. After you hit the red Switch you came to Room full with flying Enemies which you have to destroy with your Blue Throwable Block. After all of these Enemies are defeated, more will appear and a warning Sign appears that the Bridge and later after the second Form, the Blocks is gonna disappear (which by the way, in the Message Box it says "dissappear" which isn't correct since there is normally one 'S', not two, so "disappear"). The Music you chosed during the Level and the Boss was surely neat especially that some of the Rooms do change the Music Pieces a bit which is a nice touch on that Level.
Point Rating: 4

NPC Placements:
Your NPC Placements of the whole Level was good to say at least. You sure do give the Player some Enemies to deal with especially at the Boss' Room where you have to fight these weird flying Ghost things (forgot what they called but I do know that they come from SMW2 - Yoshi's Island) but I do have a little complain during the Level by these Enemy Placements and even behavours. By counting on behavours, there are Ninjis that normally replaces a SMW Ninji which surely was nice but once you grab him from the top and holding him, that Ninji isn't upside down unlike that regular SMB2 Ninji. By those Bullies, they do gain a Challenge in this Level but there is one Room (Coins at the up left and a Bully at the bottom right or in the Video Playthrough 4:45) where he just falls off while the Player is trying to come out of the Pipe which is a useless scenario as I see since once he is at the bottom of the screen, he's been defeated already and doesn't come back so make sure that the Bully isn't on the screen while the Player is trying to come in into the new Section. By the Dry Bones, their Hitbox are unnatural like if you are trying to jump on it, Dry Bones Hitbox is bigger than natural in SMB3 (since in SMB3, his hitbox was normally 32x32, not 32x64 like here or in SMW). By the whole Coin Placements, they were only ok since there are places where the Coins are very, very difficult to collect over the big holes which isn't all that good. Make sure that while jumping over a gap, the player is capeable of collecting every coins during the air. I personally don't get why there are Mushroom Coins scattered around the Level. I know for the fact that they are giving me 5 regular Coins at least but if that is the feature currently on this Level it is kind of unknown if I really have to collect them all for a Prize or not especially for the first time Playing with no information. maybe use the regular blue Coins instead but that is just my opinion. Power Up Placements were kind of low even if that Level wasn't all that long. Even that this Level isn't long to deal with all, at least give the player a bit more Power Ups because only 2 throughout the entire Level is kind of too much especially that there is a Boss at the end but the Boss wasn't all that difficult anyway. Maybe a 3rd would of be nice like in the secret Room to give at least the Player more of a reward or something. Also, these are only Mushrooms as a primary source of the whole Power Up enviorement which surely is weird for this kind of Level but yet again, my opinion.

Pretty Good

Pretty nice Sewer and Pipe Styled Level with nice Design but issues encountered.
