Well, technically, yes. A Mario game /is/ about the plot, which is why each one has a plot. (The NES generation were more subtle plots, but they had one). Mario 64 doesnt need a powerup system because it has a HP system, which works pretty much the same fashion, since the powerups work like a hitpoint sort of fashion. Sure, you didn't get any powerups that lasted throughout the game without being hit, but that would make it too easy in a game like Mario 64, since most enemies can be killed in one hit.

Mario games are absolutely not about the plot in any way. Having a plot =/= about the plot. The gameplay has always been the focus of Mario games.

(And most enemies in regular mario games can be killed in one hit too... so I'm not sure what your point is.)

Oh yeah. Hahahaha, My bad. But in all seriousness, I'd love to hear why Mario 64/Galaxy are not Mario-esque other than powerups, cause that doesnt make the whole game...but we are kinda derailing the topic so I think this arguement should stop here.

TL;DR You win ahaha. :3

I literally LOVED SMB2, it shown how well Nintendo could take a game, make the music better (like Wart), and make it more Mario like. Some of the characters stayed in Mario, some of them didn't. And in the SMB2 Prototype, the underground theme was SUPER similar to the NES SMB3 one.

OF course that counts lol! That is an NES title. Never got into that one. I played Yoshi as a kid, though. Still have it.

My favorite Mario game from the past was Super Mario 64, I just loved the exploration and gameplay. I still love/play it to this day, thanks to the wonderful community surrounding the game.

As for the first Mario game I played, it was Super Mario Kart on the SNES. The first time I played it I thought Mario and Luigi where pizzeria employees, I thought Yoshi was Godzilla, and thought that Bowser was a troll of some kind. I pretty much knew who the rest of the characters were.
