My favorite older Mario game is SMB3, even though I haven't played it in about five years

My first game was Super Mario Sunshine, though, even though that's not technically old

Super Mario World. If you notice, most of my levels are SMW styled.

I'd consider a 12 year old game 'old'. Not as old as say, Super Mario Bros for the nes, but it is old.

My favourite has to be Super Mario 64, as it was the first Mario game I have played, when I was 6. And I play it frequently, probably about 6-8 times a year when Im really bored.

Dat shits at the top of my list. Super mario 64 i play about 20 times a day. JUst the fact that its MODABLE makes it endlessly playable. Its like SMBX. It has a huge community. Theres a wepsite FULL of downloadable maps/levels/worlds to play. Its amazing.

I played all the older mario games I could find. All in an emulator, tough.
The very first mario game I have ever played? It was NSMB for the DS.

My old favourite Mario games are all for SNES, and they're Super Mario All-Stars: Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

paper mario games dont count because theyre not, i mean, theyre really only mario in terms of they have mario characters and setting, but they dont PLAY like mario at all. so yes, they're mario games, but only by franchise, not gameplay

64 was... eh, galaxy was... like, okay, effort was put into them, they're certainly not bad games, but they kind of miss the point of mario in their own unique ways

Whoa whoa whoa

How do 64 and Galaxy miss the point of Mario for you? Galaxy in particular (my all-time favorite video game by the way, so forgive me if I'm a tad biased) really feels like a Mario game in its atmosphere and style if you ask me.

Also, how do you feel about 3D Land/World? They're pretty damn similar to the classic games in terms of style and gameplay.

64 doesn't play like mario at all. Aspects of mario like the powerup system are completely removed in favor of large exploration-y worlds and punching. It may be a pretty good 3d platformer, but it really doesn't play like mario anymore.

Galaxy had more mario gameplay elements AND kept the star system of 64, but made it pointless because instead of searching for stars in a world like 64 except better, each star's mission was a completely different linear affair that sometimes shared areas.

The star system isn't bad but it could have been more mario-y in 64, and they made it futile in galaxy.

theres a lot of good in these games for sure, but I sometimes wish Nintendo went a slightly different direction.

So how do you feel about 3D Land and World? And also New Super Mario Bros when it was still new?

You gotta remember that in the 64 era, there were limitations to the games, and certain limitations were the powerups. (Which is why there are more in the DS version.) Also, a Mario game isn't defined by powerups and jumping on goombas, it's more centered around saving the Princess, which happens in mostly all Mario games, the star collecting ones included. So a Mario game that doesn't 'play like Mario because less powerups' is still a Mario game, because it focuses on the same thing all the others do, saving the Princess.

Are you really telling me a Mario game is about the plot?

Anyway, 64 DS still doesnt have more powerups. Well, I mean, they both have temporary powerups, but I was more talking about the actual Mario powerup system, with taking hits and leaves and flowers and all that fun.
