Super Mario Bros 3 Mix (smb3 hack)

Postby goombaguy » Sat Oct 04, 2014 11:54 am

Hey everyone. I just played an awesome hack. Super Mario Bros 3 Mix. I thought it would be nice to see if any of you would like to try it.

Image

-All new levels (and a few “remixed” Mario 3 levels somewhere in there)-
-Many new songs added from other Mario games (kept some SMB3 classics!)
-Play as Mario, Luigi, or Toad (cosmetic only) in any configuration
-New power-ups (Penguin replaces Frog, Carrot replaces Tanooki)
-Star Coins (which are used to unlock portions of the game!)
-Ability to re-enter past worlds (with level completion intact!)
-Ability to re-enter past levels (to get all of your Star Coins)
-Alternate exits in some levels
-Ability to save progress
-Many new enemies, typically some special ones for the world theme
-All new bosses (many are “remixes” of bosses from other Mario games)
-All kinds of gameplay changes to meet the theme of a level/world!

I seriously love this game. Please play it now at http://www.vizzed.com/play/super-mario- ... 75243-game, or download it as a ROM at http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2068/. I even think they have it on sale for the NES (probably for $50). Hope you have fun!!!!!

So, I've been playing through this, and honestly, I didn't expect very much of this game. I thought there would be recoloured graphics, enemies etc. and probably some cheesy level designs. Well, I was wrong, this game is fantastic to say the least. It does things that I thought were impossible for a SMB3 rom hack, it has quite a few cool gimmicks, levels with a decent length, a few enemies that behave differently and so much more. It has a great replay value, and although there is the graphical cut-off here and there, it isn't something that could be fixed in such an older rom, but it is easy to look past, because there is plenty of in-level action. There's even a Birdo in this one.

One level that shines out from the rest so far would have to be the reverse-gravity (upside down) water level in world 2. (The one through the warp pipe after the Ghost House). That was mind bending and truly awesome. It is clear that so much work has gone into this game and I would recommend this for any Mario fan. It's no walk in the park at all either, so there's no breezing through all of the levels and the Star Coins are needed, so don't forget them or forget to look hard for them. They are all really well placed and most involve some sort of cool gimmick to get to. Give this game a go, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. :)

It's still open and running. It just hasn't gotten much activity.

Firstly, that's one of the reasons I posted my thoughts on the hack. Secondly, now the topic is active, problem solved.

Currently at World 4, and there are still some nice surprises to see. Yoshi is usable, though somewhat glitch, I didn't expect to see him in an SMB3 Hack considering the limitations. The custom bosses are great and the level design is still top notch. The Star Coins are still hid fairly well and the gameplay still holds a decent replay value.

Yeah. The Yoshi is fun to see in this game (even though it is glitchy). Have fun on World 7. It is the best world of the game!

Just smashed World 7, and the gravity feature is quite remarkable, but it can cause a small amount of brainhurt, since jumping into a new gravity field causes you to become a fast human yo-yo. Also, I'm a little stumped with the second Star Coin the Castle of World 4 (the one before the airship). I think it has something to do with the suspiciously placed coins at the top of the flooded part of the tower, but there isn't a P-Switch to "blockify" the coins into stairs.
