A SMB2 Cave

Postby RudeGuy » Wed Oct 01, 2014 10:57 am

Didn't think of a better name, please help me finding one which fits

A level I made months ago which isn't really long or hard, unlike the other levels I posted. This level is also the 1-2 in my projects.

EDIT: I forgot to say:
1. There are 5 hidden hearts in this level and you can get them by just going on the places.
2. if you throw a ninji on another enemy or vice-versa, you'll get a run-time error.
3. subspace lags a lot because too many BGOs.

This doesn't happen with me.

EDIT: Eh... I was wrong, it happens to me too.

I thought it was called "A Cave into the Hill"
But yeah, I remember playing this and it was fun.

Design Usage:
SMB2's Spirit is coming along. This was a very well made SMB2 Themed Level. It surely brings us some nice feeling like what SMB2 did back then. You surely did made some very nice variety on your Level like flying with a Carpet with dodging... "Cheep Cheeps"? ...getting a Key inside one of these Vases in order to Advance and even Bombs to take care of the breakable Bricks. Nice variety. However there are Areas that seems not right. In one of these early Vases there are just Enemies inside it and nothing more. I know that you bring this into a SMB2 Themed Level like this but it would of be nice to have something rewardful when you at least check the new Rooms once the Player is in it like something easier to destroy Enemies or something. Speaking of these Vase Sections, you can actually be much higher at the Top and actually can fall off of them and die at either at the right or left side of it which seems not right at all. Make sure that the Player can't get out of a Vase by hopping out of the left or right side or it seems very unnatural. Also, once you get out of a Vase, there is a Block in your way and you get pushed to the side. In the original SMB2 there wasn't a Block in your way so make sure that once you get to a new Room, that Mushroom Block that is over the Vase dissappears. It is possible in SMBX. Speaking of going at the top of the screen, there is one Area where you can skip if you are doing this especially with your Carpet. Inside the Underground there are multiple pathways to choose from but of course there is a Midway point at the right path so it is recommended to choose that first but there are even more pathways to choose from after that. Several Pathways are looping around, either on a long or short one which seems ok but it wasn't necessary for a short one to loop around by exploding some breakable Blocks just to get another Bomb which seems weird even for SMB2. I do like the whole Vine Decorations inside the Cave. Nice Detail on that. Back to the Pathways, there are a few that only leads you to specific Items which was ok but you should give the player a little bit more reward than just for a single, single Ace Coin inside the Cave Section at the upper right. This Level has a Secret Exit but I tecnically couldn't really find it by my own. I was trying but no luck what so ever as you can see on my Video. At the end you fight Birdo with a broken Hawk's Mask, which seems that you forgot to put the Mask in. Once you defeated Birdo and pick up the End Sphere, the victory sound plays but you have to wait unnecessarily just to open Hawk's Mouth. In SMB2, it happens quickly instead of this Level. What I really want to mention is that you shouldn't overdo the background objects like that. I know that it supposed to be dark there but even for a powerful PC it can drag out the frames for a little. About the Arrow you placed in in the light world, if you are in the dark world (I know there is a name to it but I always forgot... was it Subspace?) however there is a Fire Flower instead which was very Clever I must say but even for 1-2 Level it should be easier as of how to even get to that in my opinion instead of having to stack the Veggies and then use it as Towers and jump onto higher places like this.
Point Rating: 3.5

NPC Placements:
Your NPC placements was ok to nice. I do like your variety of the whole Enemies on this Level but sometimes it feels a little bit too much even for an 1-2 Level. At the first Section where you have to fly over with a Carpet, there are jumping Cheep Cheeps coming out from the bottom which does not fit into the SMB2 enviorement. Maybe you forgot to add the real SMB2 Enemies in instead that they are regular SMB3 Cheep Cheeps what you can see in my Video. The rest of the Enemy Placements were ok except for a few things. The Phanto Enemy once you collect a Key, it works quite well but once you used the Key, the Key is gone but the Phanto not which seems unlogical for a SMB2 Level. Make sure that the Phanto (both in the Vase and the outside Section) disappears once you either used the Key or enter to a new Section where you used your Key. Like I said in the Design Section on one of these Vases, it could of be better to add something more instead of just 2 Enemies than nothing like some collectable Coins or something rewardful. By the relation to Bombs, you should use a Generator to these SMB2 Bombs or else if you waste them all you pretty much have to lose a 1UP and reappear at the Level again which is not good what so ever. Sadly, this isn't like SMB2 where every Sprites respawns once you enter on a different Room of the Level. Coin Placements were just ok but it could of been better to have more Coins or Cherries scattered around the Level. About Power Ups, they do are nice especially how you involved a new Idea by adding a Heart somewhere at the Level that only appears when you get to a specific Point in your Level but surely it gains confusion sometimes as of how exactly they appear but that is just my opinion.

Pretty Good

Nice SMB2 Level with some nice variety of design but issues encountered.
