The Wooded Area
Design: 4/10
This level was generally okay, albeit a bit short. It looked really empty due to the lack of coins or background objects in most parts, and in some parts there was just plain out nothing, not even enemies, and it all looked really bland. Where there WERE BGOs though, I really liked them, those palms look really cool, and I suggest if you added BGOs in front of the big tree trunks, the level would look a lot more lively and vibrant. The music was just as you'd expect, SMB2 music. The layout of the level was interesting. I liked that the second part took place over section one, but it was only one jump and was a bit short-lived, really.
NPCs: 2/10
There were some places where enemies were met in groups of two or three and really cramped together, and most of the time there were just no NPCs. I liked the bob-omb generator but it was really hazard-ish for the player because no power ups.
At one point there were three snifits walking on three 1x1 platforms on different height levels and it was really hard and somewhat unfair to get through, since you're small the whole time.
There was a general lack of power ups in this level. There were just not any. Even a SMB2 level should at least contain a mushroom somewhere.
As for coins, there weren't any either. Coins on the overworld level are not mandatory at all for a SMB2 level of course, but maybe at least put them in as a bonus in the ground somewhere.
Gameplay: 3/10
The gameplay was relatively short and rather boring, due to the lack of ANYTHING in this level. Where there were enemies, they were defeated quickly because if they appeared in groups of two, just grab the first Shy Guy and slam-dunk him into the other. Problem solved.
I liked the idea of the propeller block, although the idea wasn't executed well and was really short-lived.
Even though the level was empty I died a few times simply due to the lack of powerups. Since this level was so short it was possible to do without any, but it's still something essential that is missing here.
Props for the boss, that one was quite challenging, especially since you had to do the whole damn thing again every time you died there.
I think one word that sums this level up pretty good is "meh". It's obvious you're still a beginner. There are some good ideas in this level, they just need to be fleshed out a bit more. 3/10, moved to Average.
