Do you think it could've had mario kart music for banshee boardwalk than???Socknic wrote:I'll start out by saying that this level is pretty damn good. While it has its flaws, it provided an enjoyable experience. I'll touch on the graphics first. While you only used a few custom graphics, the SMW ghost house tileset got the job done. The only thing that bugged me regarding the graphics was the appearance of the lamps. They didn't really fit the SMW theme. The music was also fitting for a haunted level. Moving onto the gameplay, the level was pretty solid and playable. It rarely felt unfair or incomplete. Power-up and enemy placement was pretty good, though there were some sections that felt a big over-crowded. There's not too much else to say about it. To conclude this review, Boo Banshee Boardwalk provides a relatively good experience, and, while there's nothing too special about it, it's worth checking out.

It doesn't really matter where music comes from, as long as it's mp3 format (To prevent audio issues for some people) and fitting to the level theme.lighthouse64 wrote:Do you think it could've had mario kart music for banshee boardwalk than???Socknic wrote:I'll start out by saying that this level is pretty damn good. and to elaborate a bit more on this, i agree with the mp3 recommendation. mp3 @ 320kb/s is more than enough quality for a mario game and still keeps the file size fairly low for a single level. for full episodes, might want to scale it back a little. but there's absolutely no reason for using wav files as they just take up too much space.Socknic wrote:It doesn't really matter where music comes from, as long as it's mp3 format (To prevent audio issues for some people) and fitting to the level theme.

Design - 9/10
This is a very interestingly designed level. It starts out in a linear boardwalk with very few obstacles and platforming, until you hit the first jump, and that's when it starts getting good. The gameplay for this is honestly fantastic, and it's rare I find a SMW level so fun. The exploration and music is great on top of that, and you used generic graphics which captures the traditional Mario feel. To start being nit-picky, though, you should have maybe added more puzzles to this, because I felt all I was doing is going right and finding secrets (which I never mentioned that the secrets were rewarding and hidden well). Secondly, everything was SMW-styled until you hit the Tanooki Suit and Leaf. I mean, I guess this really isn't a problem, but I just find it a bit odd, that's all. Thirdly, the fun factor in this level was pretty good, but on the other hand the spam of certain things made you go downhill (see the Placement category for more details). Another flaw with this level is that once you enter the pipe that the hidden vine led you to in section four, the pipe exits you back into section three, and I don't understand why unless it was meant to be a trap. Conclusively, if you accidentally drop the Spring Board down the pit in a few sections, you're forced to die, and I strongly dislike that. Perhaps add a generator or something.
Atmosphere - 6.5/10
This category most likely got a lower score that you would have expected it to, but allow me to explain why: The whole lack of scenery in all of the sections but section 3 and the cluster of random background object blocks in section 3 really threw you off since background objects are the main thing that makes up a good atmosphere. On the other hand, however, the aesthetics were great (yes, I will be covering aesthetics in this category) due to the sinister atmosphere which you managed to pull off very well with generic graphics. Still, though, you need huge improvement in terms of the atmosphere, and that's why you got a six and a half as a score.
Placement - 7/10
The placement in this level was pretty good, but there was a Boo spam in all of the sections but a few, and if you remove some of these little Boos, you could add some Big Boos to add a better variety. Regarding the powerups, you added way too much despite the fact you got hit by Boos a lot. Still, though, even if you're prone to getting hit a lot in this level, you should tone down the power-up placement, because it honestly could get quite spammy sometimes. Also, the location for the T-switch wasn't hidden whatsoever, when the reward for keeping it and hitting it later is a bunch of overpowered items that you don't need nor deserve. Oh, and I noticed that throughout the level there weren't much pipes for the sole purpose of decoration which is a bit weird. Lastly, I know I have already covered this in the Atmosphere section, but man, the lack of scenery in all of the sections but section 3 really threw you off and the cluster of randomly and sloppily placed BGOs in section 3 also threw you off.
Overall Score - 7.5/10
If I were an official level judge, this would go in Pretty Good.
