Locking Threads - Complaint & Debate

Honestly, I'm tired of administrators assuming "this thread is going to turn out bad and cause drama locked". I'm tired of administrators locking threads because "this user tried to cause drama these two were arguing locked". I'm tired of administrators locking a debate because it "stirs up the shitpot and makes the administrators look bad". What do you think the purpose of a forum is? Yeah, its purpose is to punish INDIVIDUAL users, not punish the thread! I feel like this whole place is just one class consequence. This guy does something bad, the creator of this really good debate gets pissed off because his thread got locked, and the creator of the original thread which got locked will create ANOTHER thread complaining, and I'm probably not going to be here much longer if this keeps up like that because it's honestly inane.

I just want to see how long this lasts before "oh yeah this guy was being mean locked" or "this guy makes the administrators look bad". If you were wondering, though, I'm NOT trying to make the administrators look bad, but I'm just saying that they can be ridiculous sometimes with their locking system.

And, if you're going to deny me, I'll give proof. On this thread. For the entire public to see.

I'm not going to deny what you're saying, in fact, I'm going to ask you, "Is there really any purpose for those threads that oh so cause drama?". Wait, let me simplify my question even more, "Is there really any purpose for any threads related to unpleasant events that occur in this forum?". This is a Mario fan game forum, not a place where everybody gets along with each other. It may happen, but that's not the point of this place.

Major of the threads I've seen that get locked because "they cause drama" are threads saying stuff like "this user shouldn't have been banned", or "why have I been banned on the IRC?", or mere apology threads and all kinds of stuff like that. And whether they cause drama or not, they serve no purpose anyway. Any of them can be handled by PM instead of making a whole thread for such a topic. This thread is no different, it serves no purpose "but cause unnecessary drama".

2bfair, Kep, I did that with this thread, and not much happened except someone not related to the topic tried to grandstand in it and got it locked again.

Course, I want to unlock it if it still has a purpose to serve, but that's up in the air right now. I generally like locking threads to clear up storms but I would like to see us, the staff, unlock threads after shit has died down. Yes we should lock threads when things get bad, but not leave them locked.

Was this not discussed before? Like, straight after the incident on the selfie thread? Pretty sure there's another topic about it lying around here somewhere that Joey had made comments on.

We're not preemptively locking threads to prevent drama.

We're locking threads because they're bad.

And indeed, when they get bad, they should be locked.

However, I feel like there are those threads that just get bad because of the posters, not the topic itself. We should be more lenient on locking threads, yes, but we would be drawing a line, not promoting any topic you can think of.

F'instance, if the topic is "LET'S TALK ABOUT CHRISTIANITY" then that relies on the posters, and thus, shouldn't be locked indefinitely just because it's a hot topic. If it gets locked because of a couple unruly posters, it should be unlocked once the dust settles down. If it either gets repeatedly locked or if the OP derails his own thread, then it should stay locked.

Personally, I believe we really shouldn't preemptively lock threads just because they're gonna be sensitive topics. Let's see how it works out and if it gets unruly, that's a good time to put it away for a bit.

Basically, I just want to give the community more chances to brush up on their maturity.

I can almost guarantee, though, that this topic was made in response to Hawkeyeone's "Concern" thread.

That was a terrible thread. Stop overreacting whenever we lock a topic.

Maybe it was, but I'm sure Kep had in mind other incedents. It's just the straw that broke the camels back.

I naturally don't mind if a Topic gets Locked while reading through most/all of these Messages they deserve around this Forum. Honestly, I do not really like how someone gets pestered to the Admins & Mods again just for "Locking" a Thread. Why can't we just deal with it? I wish this isn't difficult anymore.

Agree here!!!

It's most likely people don't want to create a forum to see how bad it is going to turn out. So they just blot it out here about having locking privileges here.

No, it wasn't. That was a coincidence and I understand why that was locked.

I'm not overreacting, and saying that because you "think" I disagreed with the locking of Hawkeyeone's "Concern" thread is unprofessional. I have a point in making this thread. If I didn't have a point in making this thread, I wouldn't have posted it.

Okay, you might be overreacting, but you are sure being mouthy.

What I said to Joey was nothing but strictly and firmly said. It was not mouthy and/or rude.

Also, since this thread isn't getting anywhere, lock, please.

Yeah it might be for the better, before I say something rude.

I'm OK with locking outright bad topics like Hawkeyeone's.

I don't like when the staff use the "useless post" terminology.
