Wart's Lava Lair

Postby HenryRichard » Thu Jul 10, 2014 4:11 pm

This is a little level I made, in which Mario must save puppies from wart! Did I say Wart? I mean Fire Wart, because this is a lava-themed level. So enjoy.

Very lava. Cool Doge.

Generally...
A weird level, but it has such good quality, I can't consider it a joke level. I mean, the concept of saving the Doges is really unoriginal, but it works, since Wart is such a fiend. Either way, though, this level had a lot of the flaws. But the biggest flaw is the difficulty. It is... honestly impossible. Jumping over lava, avoiding abrupt hammers, fighting Wart, picking up stuff... it's just everything in one. It's not good level design. And, yeah. The music for the outskirts is fine, but the music for the castle is meh. A castle isn't an airship. An airship isn't a castle. So why do you have airship music for a non-airship? It just... doesn't make sense. Also, the red effect for the first section is downright horrid. It hurts your eyes, and doesn't fit the lava feel since lava really isn't that red and bright. Therefore, I'd change it from reddish to orangish, but still, keep some red, since having a fully orange tileset and background would be awkward, to say the least. Anyway, now to discuss the propeller-lava part. If you're not Link, you cannot get out of the lava-propeller part. Why? Because it's so ridiculously narrow, it's impossible. So please fix this. And the Blue Switch clashes with the level's palette. So how about use the red switch and recolor it to fit SMB2? Anyhow, you really need to add some SMB2-styled scenery in the castle. It's just weird being in empty places in SMBX. Conclusively, don't even make me discuss section 6. If the whole level was like that, this would get a one.

Pros...
-good lava atmosphere
-nice SMB2 atmosphere
-good SMB2 lava
-unoriginal but well-executed objective: save the Doges
-neat Birdo gimmick
-splendid coin placement in the first and fourth section
-brilliant variety of enemies

Cons...
-sixth section is downright hilarious, but also downright unnecessary
-eyeraping first section: fix the red effect
-needs more scenery in every section, even including the first
-so difficult, it's 99.9999999999999999999999% impossible
-bad music for the castle
-actually impossible lava part if you don't have Link to hit the blue switch
-blue switch clash
-I dunno how the boss is even possible it's so complicated
-Doge has 1x1 pixels, even if it's deliberate it needs fixed
-the very top of the second section is barely possible due to the blatant Snifit spam
-is that fourth section even possible? Buddy, you really need to test your levels because you're getting lots of points taken off for stuff like this

Quote of the Year...

Other Notes...
A little less than average level.

Overall...
4

If I were an official judge, this would go in Average.

Thanks for the review, Key Kep. I don't quite get some of the things you're saying, but most of it makes since. Oh, and the doges don't have 1x1 pixels, they are just not 16-bit. Watch Video

Bolding what I don't get.
-i meant the level was 99% impossible
-i meant the music for the castle/palace/inside place doesn't fit
-if you can't access the blue switch in the first section with link, you're screwed
-how do you not understand what i meant? i'm saying the boss is overcomplicated
-...
-i meant the fourth section is for the most part impossible

Is that supposed to be a review? You only "talked" about graphics and your reaction.

@bossedit8's Review - Wart's Lava Lair - Level created by @HenryRichard

Design Usage:
Super Mario Bros. 2 Styled Level. I really like how it is constructed here like that there are inside and outside Sections around this Lair. The Music choice was nice but once you are inside Wart's Lair you hear a Airship Theme from SSBB which seems a bit out of place to be honest. At the beginning there are a few Platforms with Enemies that seems to be very difficult without a Ninji. Link can get a little bit of trouble to jump over this kind of gap with Lava. Once you are inside the Lair you need to collect every Coins in a little area to go further along but that weird "Super Metroid" Block under the Key you need it seems out of place for this Level. I know the point of it but still. Also I found this little issue:
Image
Yeah. After that you see 3 character blocks to get along only 3 characters which is a clever formation we have on this Level that later that you can change back to a character you want but surely a "forceable" spinjump is normally not always the best idea even if you put character block in. It is clever though but not everyone knows it unless you put a sign or something to tell you about the spinjump usage. At least you can defeat those hedgehogs that you need to spinjump over with your Fireballs so there are multiple options. Once you are at the top of this Lair where it is outside there is a high chance of falling into the Pit because of the confusion of the foreground and background objects. Not completly nice. Well, they do have an obvious tone into it like the brighter ones are background objects but still there is a high chance that you just fall into the brighter areas anyway for the first time playing (like what I did). After the outside Section you gain the Midpoint and after that little Area where the Midpoint is you fight Wart and after him you are basically done with this Level. So the length of this Level was nice.

NPC Placements:
The whole placements and behavours those NPCs do was nice. You did made this Level a nice Challenge about your Enemy placements here but sadly, sometimes it can be a bit too much by the first time playing this Level especially those stacked ones like Snifits on some Areas. There are a few Birdos before the entrance and inside the Tower/Lair that you have to defeat them to get along which was nice but the secondary one was difficult because you also have to avoid generated Bombs from both of these walls from the left and right but it isn't all that of a trouble because only the explosion hurts you. By the Midway Point there are Iceball Generators only pointing to the left side attached to the blue Mushroom Blocks which was nice but only to the left side to attack and once you get hit while holding one while moving it glitches out completly which is bad. I guess this isn't all that noticeable anyway but what is the point of generating Iceballs from a Mushroom Block anyway when you can just throw that Block to an Enemy instead? Whatever, it was ok. At near where Wart is, while Wart and after that where your end is there are Dog NPC like behaving Mushrooms and Veggies. This is the part where I can't take this Level seriously because of the unfitting Dog Pictures in it. Why is this even a thing? Coin placements was decent but a bit too low on certain areas like at the outside section on the top building because there's nothing. Power Up placements was decent but I think you could add a few Mushrooms every now and then so it wouldn't be all that too difficult especially fighting the secondary Birdo and after that. At least you put 1UPs on hard required areas to obtain them but the one that is like at the bottom right at the outside section seems too easy.

Overall Rating Score: 8

Pretty Good

Very nice Lair with great Challenges into it but a few things that isn't completly right.
