SMB3 Coral

Postby Valtteri » Wed Jul 02, 2014 10:29 am

No more SMB1 corals in SMB3 levels. Never again.

For those who care, SMB3 never really had small versions of the giant corals from that one level in the giant world. However, the giant coral sprite from SMB3 (the NES version; the SNES version had a completely redrawn tile) is actually a 16x16 tile (we're talking 1x1 pixels now) resized to 32x32 resulting in large pixels:

I took it and resized it so it's 16x16 and shaded it à la Super Mario All-Stars. And we have a real SMB3 normal coral tile to spam your water levels full of!

I never really cared about coral graphics. It looks decent. The shading and outline are poorly done, though.

The outline looks really weird to me. Otherwise good job.

The outline is straight from SMB3 for the NES and the shading is identical to the giant version so I'm not very willing to change them, sorry.

Except I did actually shade it differently first before deciding to obey the giant graphic:

Here's the other one for comparison:

I like your work and all Valtteri, I mean your extended tilesets and Let It Go cover we're all amazing, but this looks just plain stupid. The outline is way overdone and it makes the entire thing look like a collection of smashed together shading.

In short, this was a failed attempt at a small SMB3 coral.

Dude, just Let it Go already.
Lol, but really, this is about 40/60.
40% Good, 60% Bad.

So in like SMB Coral that has that, let's make a SMB3 Version out of it which is a good idea. For me, nothing is really wrong in terms of the shading and weird like cutoff because that is (kind of) normal. Good work.

I have to agree with TNT. There's too much black and not enough orange. It sort of looks withered.

Well, for me there is nothing wrong in that though. I guess everyone has their opinions anyway so that explains it.

Also, we kind of have the SMB3 Donut Block (Rounded) as a Coral Tile but this one definetly gives out more coral tiles instead of only a few.

I don't like either. I'd rather just recolor the SMB1 one.

I don't know why, but for me the SMB1 coral fits more with SMB3.

I like this, looks a bit strange but that's fine I guess. And of course, somebody will like Valtteri's version, somebody will Emral's, because all of us have different tastes.
