Ride Yoshi or slide slopes?

Do you guys think it "waters down" what you can do in level design because you can't use those elements? I kinda do.

They are underpowered because they are underdeveloped. Redigit never got the time to actually give them the same abilities as Mario and Luigi do.

They were created so because they acted like this in SMB2.

Such a fallacy. They were developed to the same length as Mario, Luigi, and Link. Redigit designed them as they were played in SMB2.

They have special abilities (Peach can fly and Toad is very fast) and those elements aren't really a big thing.

Also they can hold their fireballs and throw them up and Mario and Luigi can't do this.

Toad has the ability to double jump in Raccoon/Tanooki form which non of the bros can Peach's fireball bounces off the wall. So I wouldn't call em underpowered

Okay maybe underpowered was the wrong word. What I mean was, if you were making a Mario Luigi Toad Peach episode, would it feel limiting to not make Yoshi absolutely mandatory?

Yoshi mustn't be a limitation in projects of this kind.

The only limitations Peach and Toad really have are the inability to ride Yoshis or slide, and in Peach's case, no spin-jumping. Even the latter can be solved by designing areas so that where spin-jumping is necessary, Peach can still hover over those parts. As for Yoshis and sliding, hardly anyone makes use of those. Boots aren't a bad substitute for Yoshis, but filters can be set up if they're really needed.

So there are a few limitations, but if you can work around them (even if it isn't in a graceful fashion), you should be good. It's best that you do if they're playable options, but if you'd rather not go through the trouble, don't make them playable.

I made a SMBX Episode with no Boots and Yoshis but you can play with Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad. Also, as a Peach's Note, if she has a Leaf or a Tanooki Power Up, she can hover longer but her flight like any other playable characters is not the same (she jumps very very high after running but on a lower rate while flying).
