Philips wins motion control lawsuit against Nintendo

Dutch electronics giant Philips has won a patent infringement case against Nintendo, with patents related to the Japanese manufacturer's Wii technology.

Philips had been trying to come to a licensing agreement with Nintendo back in 2011 over the motion tracking tech, stating that Nintendo had infringed on its own motion and gesture tracking system with its Wii console line.

But when Nintendo allegedly wouldn't play ball, Philips filed legal action against the company in various countries, including the U.S. last month.

Now Philips says that one of the four lawsuits that it filed in different regions of the world -- the lawsuit filed in the UK -- has been decided in Philips' favor.

"It's about a patent for motion, gesture and pointing control that we make available to manufacturers of set-top boxes and games consoles through a licensing programme," Philips spokesperson Bjorn Teuwsen told Reuters.

There has not yet been word on how this will affect Nintendo's Wii and Wii U consoles, nor did Philips give much indication of what sort of compensation they are looking for.

"We've requested fair compensation for the use of our patents," Teuwsen said.
Discuss now further information will be posted as soon we know how the Wii will be affected by this now.

Just because motion controls does not mean copyright.

I've heard of Philips because they're the ones behind the CDi, i.e. the console that supported the Zelda CDi games and Hotel Mario. I think they also make home phones or something.

Have you even played the CDi games? ;) (hint: don't say games are shit unless you have actually played it) The CDi games were good, they were memorable. No, they weren't up to par with Nintendo's games, but they were still memorable.

They also make DVD Players, Blu-ray, TVs, etc. If anything Philips is just another patent troll that wants money from Nintendo. First of all, Philips sued Nintendo years after the release of the Wiimote. That sounds weird because they certainly took their time to do this and also suspicious because they have seemingly ignored the patent infringement for so long. Secondly, this isn't the first time Nintendo got sued for patent infringement.

Anyway, the worst they can do is ban Wiimotes in the UK, and even that seems incredibly unlikely.

Then don't judge it if you haven't played it. Watching someone play it on youtube doesn't count.

Case closed.

OT: I have to agree with Pixy, I find it kinda odd they didn't sue like back in 2006 or 2007.

Yeah they're obviously patent trolls in this case. They must've just realized that they have a patent that vaguely covers the Wiimotes and now they're suing for it.

Same thing here. IDK what phillips is.

I love how the spokesperson basically admitted to patent trolling. They created a patent just so that they would get paid for licensing it. I've certainly heard of Philips, but I've never heard of any sort of motion control technology for any kind of "set top box" they've developed. They don't seem to have any intention to use the patent for themselves, they just want to get money for being the first to patent it. That's not (or at least shouldn't be) how it works.

I believe Nintendo can and will appeal this decision. It's ridiculous.
