Uhh, it's the place where seniors/juniors go to at around the end of a high school year to party and socialize. There is plenty of music and food for everyone to enjoy. Then there is the after-prom. Basically, then the kids go out and do some crazy illegal shit and come home afterwards from a hangover.

Hope this helped.

It's basically a school-sponsored dance near the end of the year, often (but not always) exclusive to "upperclassmen" (i.e. juniors and seniors), that is the year's biggest dance. People who go are usually expected to have a date to some extent, and it's a pretty stressful time for many people because of this but also an exciting one.

Well here in Norway we're forced to to come on proms, so it's a excuse to not come home hungry as always :P

I think he thinks (correctly or incorrectly, I'm not sure seeing as how I live in the US myself) that prom only happens in the US.

You said you are 14. What prom could you possibly go to at that age?

If you hadn't noticed, I also don't go to school!

It's the sheer concept of it.

Prom? The thing that could come closest to that here in Germany is the party we have after our graduation. Except that this party isn't school-sponsored, we students have to pay it all ourselves.

For a second I thought you don't go to school at all at age 14, but if you are homeschooled, that's fine. I miss interpreted you.

Let's not be unnecessarily cynical about prom.

It's fine as a social event, and it would probably be awesome if you go with a large group of friends that all have dates (I haven't done that for prom, but have for other dances). You just have to make it fun, the event itself won't do that for you.

Some highschool dance people really like for some reason. Disney even made a movie about one a few years ago.
