Monstrous Mineshaft

Postby MarioWorker12 » Sun Jun 15, 2014 8:50 am

Well, this one should be made a while before, probably it's older than one year. It's a long one, and I suppose it's a little hard - though I might feel like that because I terribly lack of gameplay skills :P Anyway, this still stands as one of my favorite levels among my work, so I wanted people who don't know about it enjoy it as well - and well, having some feedback again wouldn't hurt either :P

Enough talking, here's a sneak peek for the level:

Lol I read "Monstrous Minecraft" but it looks like a nice level, (well, if you consider lava and undead turtles "nice") I think I'll download it and play it later :)

Edit: Uhm... "may be a little hard"?! That's almost impossible D:

It's probably one of the best mine/cave levels I ever played. It's really amazing. One hard level, with acceptable obstacles. I really liked how you structured this, since I don't like very much levels with switch abuse. But, in this, you do a good work. The atmosphere is amazing, since you use SMW tileset + SMB3 Styled Ghost House platforms + SMB3 styled background and everything matches perfectly fine. The music is really good to the ambient too. The level difficulty is acceptable, but I think you can decrease the difficulty in some little parts, like in the Grinder part (you have to spin jump to continue in the level, and when you will jump in another platform, you can't avoid the Red Koopa Troopa).

Gameplay - 4.35/5
It's a really enjoyable level. I loved that. All the system was built in a unique and acceptable way. The desing it's a good point in the level and make this more enjoyable. I really liked how this level is hard without a grand amount of enemies/
several cramped areas/ several hard areas. To expand the gameplay quality, I suggest you to add a Checkpoint in some part, improve some parts that are very difficult and best placement of power-ups (add one more too in any part, if you want).

Design/Placement - 3.95/5

Design:
A non-linear level, with several paths and with a excelent level design. I really loved that. How you have to go in this level, the Switch system (even I don't like so much that) is perfectly fine in this too. I really liked how you structured the design (with several slopes and with the platforms suspended in the ceiling). I just think you can do a better polishment in this to make this better. I really loved the scenario too (Even though I have seen some cut-offs). This level don't have so much secrets, but this isn't a problem, because this level is really good without them. The Star secret pipe need to be placed in a better place.

Placement:
Acceptable coin placement; Good enemie placement, but I think you can remove some of them in some parts without so much paths to walk or with a grand amount of slopes; Acceptable Dragon Coin placement; I think you have to do a better placement of power-ups in this level, because it's a really hard level and this need some more power-ups in some parts and a better division.

Atmosphere - 4.60/5
Fantastic atmosphere. It's not unique, but it's perfect how you structured that. You gave unique design elements and reinvented one level. Even using platforms/switch gimmicks, that are "outdated and widely used". In terms. If you can reuse it as here, the level will be good. I really liked the design aspects and details, the scenario, the music. This level really have a good vibe.

Aesthetics - 4.35/5
It's a level with a great aesthetics, but I think you can fix some things in this. The scenario placement is good, but you leave some "amateur details" in this. And some cut-offs. The design don't have major problems, but a revamp isn't bad (never is). And decrease the difficulty in some parts (it's not the most of the parts, but you can do that in some really hard paths).

Overall - 17.25/20 or 8.625/10
