The quickest way would be to get Gimp (which is free), open the colormap tab, and change the colors. Paint isn't really the best option, but I guess you could do it if you had a lot of time.

If you have Paint.NET (Free Downloadable Program) you can pretty much edit/recolor them with no problems. Here is what I use to recolor a graphic:
German = English
Farbton = Tone
Sättigung = Saturation
Helligkeit = Lightness/Brilliance/Luminosity

Download Paint.NET. Use the paint bucket. Make it 0% tolerance and put it on flood mode. Choose a color. Start filling.

1. We save the sprites in our computer, in our favorite folder;
2. From some sites of sprites. Check the pipe "SMBX links" above the page

Favorite's Folder eh? Not the best solution to me.

Anywhere inside your PC you like. It does not really matter but one important thing is you need to find them again, not matter where it is stored on your PC.

You can edit the original graphics that SMBX has but remember that you need to make a backup first (copy then paste it somewhere) because you do not want to make the original graphics changed up. There are specific websites like Sprite Resource where you can get sprites to download. After you get those sprites you want you have to resize them so they fit to either real Tilesets, backgrounds and/or NPCs. Make sure that you have to make the Mask too.

Ok I have another question. How do you put the sprite that you customized into your level.

Put it in your level folder.

If you want a Level that is called for example
grassland, create a new folder that has the exact same name as the level's name,
grassland. Go into your new created folder that has the exact name on it and then you can put your customized graphics in there.

Can you show it to us? Like a screenshot or better provided a Download Link so we can see why it does that?

It's flashing to black because you need to recolor all the animation sprites for the NPC. If you look at an NPC in the graphics folder in SMBX, you won't just find one sprite for it, and if you delete the other sprites as well, then it will start flashing to black as it's trying to animate normally. Each sprite represents the animation that the NPC makes, from top to bottom, left to right.
