SMBX In-House Contest (2nd Seasonal Contest) - The Results

After not much anticipation I'm kinda happy to announce the results to the In-House Contest. We had 3 submissions, which is enough for a podium. Special thanks to my judges for putting time in as well, thanks to the entrants who did submit levels, and to all of you watching.

Here are your results for the Summer contest in the seasonal contest run, In-House!

Note: Be sure to look at individual judge reviews to see if you earned any medals from any judges.

3rd Place - RotoDiscsWrath by IcyBrd - 3.55/10
Spoiler: show
The Thwomp King - 2.97/10

I respect the Rotodisk love; the aesthetic and custom graphics paired with the normal SMB3 castle fits very well. I also liked collecting the 8 red coins; besides the one in the winding path (glad you created a shortcut after getting that coin), most of the coins were well placed. As far as structure there seemed to be a handful of cheap hits against the player with the number of roto-firebars and tight spacing with the roto-bloopers as examples. This caused the level to be way more frustrating than necessary. At the very least I did feel a little bad defeating the Roto-Lord.

Medal - Pro-Roto Rights

MECHDRAGON777 - 4.49/10

I did enjoy the æsthetic of everything being a roto-disk, but the entire thing just felt awkwardly unfair.

Ness-Wednesday - 3.7/10
Spoiler: show
The graphic replacements? Awesome! But the level design sadly holds back a potentially funny experience. The vertical section is long with only a few obstacles and narrow paths. The penultimate section should give the player a Toothy Pipe instead of a Billy Gun. After the midpoint, you fight Mother Brain with three Roto Discs cramping the player's space. It felt like the level was tested using cheats or wasn't playtested for peer review due to the long gap before the midpoint and the bizarre difficulty spikes. I recommend asking others for peer feedback when desigining levels.

Medal - Most Disco

MegaDood - 3.05/10
Spoiler: show
I felt this level had a lot of ambition, but with so many different ideas being presented it all felt disjointed from one another. The first part felt cramped with enemies, then became a lot easier later on, I feel like that first part could have been the final part since it used most of the roto disc enemies and felt more finale like. A few other parts such as the long water maze and the bricks with no way of knowing if there's a wall ahead I felt dragged it down. I think this level could have been shorter, focused just on the billy gun and roto dics, and I would have enjoyed it a lot more. The use of roto disc themed things was cool though.

Medal - Most Breakfast

2nd Place - Four-Square Fort by NebulaePrimo - 5.88/10
Spoiler: show
The Thwomp King - 6.01/10
Spoiler: show
I enjoyed the sense of humor with this one. I also thought it was clever having the level constantly change through switches while keeping it all in one screen. Even in the second half with the autoscrolling that was pretty clever, but moving around the actual blocks instead of autoscrolling via events did cause some jank with the projectiles. I did appreciate the direct approach with the SMW Castle too followed up with a Ludwig boss fight, though you could've replaced the visuals here if you wanted to (that was fair game if you had another favorite Koopaling). The boss fight itself could be cheated a bit if you dragged Ludwig to the far left as he'd be way easier to hit, and also not having the bowser statue disappear after killing Ludwig does leave room for the player to be killed post-fight. Otherwise this was a solid entry that followed the theme well!

MECHDRAGON777 - 4.6/10

Almost a pure vanilla level. Been a while sense I have seen a reverse-auto scroll which is nice to see as well. The level did feel a bit more Rompy, but had it's own unique charm. Not cool having the boswer statue remain in the boss fight after defeating Ludwig however.

Medal - Most Creative

Ness-Wednesday - 6.24/10

Comedic and conceptually clever, especially the second square. Besides the Thwomp in room 3 being so close to the previous switch block, square 2's unpredictability made it amazing. Unfortunately, the execution drys out after the midpoint. The Bowser Statue in the Ludwig fight adds to the challenge, but you can easily camp him with the Fire Flower. I think the level should've stuck with the second square's gimmick instead of the pseudo-scroll. Besides the first Star Coin, they all felt like easy givens. Overall, while the level has its flaws, I sense potential in you. I'm interested in seeing what you'll make next.

MegaDood - 6.68/10

I really enjoyed this one. The creativity for a 1.3 level was really something and I felt the ever changing room where hitting a block to progress kept things fun to play. The level design was nothing particularly special in my opinion, but it didn't need to be when the whole point was to stay in a single room. Things felt fair as well. I do thing the autoscroll part could have moved a bit faster, as dying at the boss would have meant a lot of waiting, and I think it might have been cool to expand a bit more on the changing room idea. Overall though, really nice level!

1st Place - SMB2 Ahh Forest by SuperAlex - 5.89/10
Spoiler: show
The Thwomp King - 5.95/10
Spoiler: show
I liked the Subcon Forest theme, and starting off with a vertical segment was fun. I was surprised there wasn't a power-up until the second section though, I think a visual or sign that showed which of the split paths had the blue switch block would've helped as I wasted my time going down first before realizing my mistake. Otherwise the level itself is pretty well executed and decently fun with a classic Birdo fight at the end.

This as a great forest and I did enjoy the majority of it, but the switch block routes did feel off-putting.

Really appreciate seeing someone make a 1.3 level for this contest. I love the downwards section, barring the jumpscaring Tweeter. I also love me some Shy Guy towers. Nothing crazy happens, but it's otherwise a fun romp with some charm. I prefer the switch block barrier took you to a bonus area instead of blocking your progression. Not sure what challenge the Para-Goombas are meant to offer in the Birdo fight. At least it's free ammo with the Ice Flower. Shoutouts to the obligatory Piranha Plant in every pipe!

Side-note: You're so evil for that second starcoin, LMAO.
Medal - 2014 called. They want their plants back.

MegaDood - 3.85/10

Wow, the aesthetics on this one were lovely. I really liked how the colours worked together and gave it a pleasant feel throughout. While it was mostly a romp, I had some things I didn't like so much. Some enemies towards the start could appear onscreen suddenly and were hard to react to, and the first switch block made you backtrack if you went the wrong way first, I think pick a path sections aren't often done for a reason. I also thought maybe you could have used a few more powerups throughout. Pretty fun, but I did have my gripes.
And that concludes what may be the closest results in SMBX Contest History (correct me if I'm wrong, but definitely the closest in my contest's history). Huge congrats to all SuperAlex, and a shoutout to NebulaePrimo and IcyBrd as well for competing. I know this contest wasn't as popular as the previous one, but I hope to see more entries in the next contest.

Stay tuned in the coming week(s) for the next contest!

Yea I felt like that beginning screwed things over for this contest. Congrats on the 3 people who got stuff, and here’s hoping that the next contest does better the next time around!
