Hideous Hive

Postby Spinoss » Sun Jun 01, 2014 9:43 pm

I found this amazing tileset made by Kokorov and simthomas, and don't remember any level made using it, which is a real waste.
This level gave me alot trouble due to the overload error in SMBX, so I had to erase a whole section, but I think it still has a decent lenght.

Does it have "Hornet Hole" theme playing? If not then 2/10 does not have Donkey Kong in it.

Just kidding, but I really like the concept of hive levels. Climbing hives...while dodging those Zingers coming at you from behind and you have no escape...oh those were the days.

I honestly rate this level 10/10

First of all the way you executed this level to resemble a beehive is fantastic. That gave you the 3 points. The difficulty is is not too hard and not too easy, another 3 points. The music gives you a feel of suspense or a feeling as if you were in an unknown territory. You have to make your way past many locked doors and past many ferocious bees and honey-like creatures. That gives you one point. Now the challenges were classic and easy to accomplish. Nothing too intricate, all you have to do is just collect keys and pass man eating hornets. This makes you feel a sense of achievement when collecting the keys to progress on. That gives you the 2 points. And last but not least, the level is fun to play. Everything blends in so perfectly to give you a unique playing experience.

I look forward to more levels from you.

Review - Hideous Hive

SOMEONE FINALLY USED MY FENCE KOOPAS :'D ilyilyily
Nah but really, I think I played this when I first came back on Knux's forums but I dont remember, oh well only one way to find out. I've never ever played a hive level (besides the fact that i might've played this on knux's idr though) so yeah, wish me luck xd.
First impressions: good. The bright yellow isn't as eye raping as the the bright red from omega island thankfully so I know I'll have a nice time with this. Music is fitting too. AND FINALLY: someone understands that enemies don't belong anywhere near the player's start. FINALLYYYYYY. Using yellow water and then using quicksand instead of water was clever too, really gives it that honey like feel. The honey bubbles are clever as fuck too. (And then, I get to see my masterpiece in action. They work alot like SMW and I'm proud of myself for that :'D)

I have but one complaint so far: getting the key across to the other side is kind of a pain, I don't know if you can throw it so it reaches but you should implement a platform in between the two landmasses so the player can hop to that and bring the key straight across. Probably on the death event of the bubble (but don't put a message box they're very glitchy in the editor, learned that the hard way).

Bees replacing boos: also clever. I believe they're Super Mario Land styled too which goes quite well with the level.

Honestly, so far this level is phenominal. Nice platforming? Check. Unique level style? Check. Cleverly made enemies? Check. Wowowowow snoopdoggydoge is impressed that's for sure.

At this point, im in the third section (w/ the half way point) but then..i found something to complain about (was really hoping I wouldn't D:). The little fence section in the third section, this is the highest i can get mario to jump

Kind of a problem, I just cheated to turn into Luigi and even he can barely make it! And having the bee right there too doesn't help much.
But then I'm reminded of something this level did right: progressive difficulty (no its not a new subgenre). The level starts off fairly easy and then gets progressively harder with each section and I can really appreciate that, kudos to you for getting this right as that's something I've always struggled with.
(but for the love of god why can't i spin jump on these assholes)
phew, nonetheless that last stretch felt like bullet hell (google it) but it was still fun.

Atmosphere: well it certainly felt like a beehive and i love super mario world :D 10/10

Gameplay: progressive difficulty, cleverly made enemies, nice platformng. wowowowow you got it all. 10/10

NPC Placement: some npcs were just assholes like really. sometimes it felt like you took away powerups right as we got them. 8/10

Graphics: everything matched nicely, no complaints here. 10/10

Overall Score: 9.5/10 wowowowowowowowowowowwow <3 do yourself a favour and play this level. it's legitimately great honestly. minor complaints aside, most people should be able to appreciate this.
