Ideal Yoshi/Dragon Coin Placement

For the longest time I've been putting Dragon Coins in a number of hard to reach/secret areas, but looking at SMW levels for reference made me realize: a lot of the Dragon Coins are pretty out in the open or even directly in your path. So I was wondering: is that better or no? Or maybe even a balance of being a little tricky to obtain all 5 in a level but every so often there's a "freebie" of sorts.

The reason why Yoshi coins are in open areas is reward - a measly 1-up - for getting all 5. In SMBX(2) you could define more versatile rewards like stars for collecting Dragon coins. The most interesting use for Yoshi Coins was in The Second Reality Project 2(original, not remake). The bonus stars from end level Goal Gate can be collected only if Mario gets all 5 Yoshi coins in one go, and maximum 3-4 per level due to obstructions right before goal. Collecting 100 bonus stars in that hack awards access to Green Switch Palace, which is needed to finish the game.

You're thinking of Super Mario Infinity 2, not The Second Reality Project 2.
