[npc] wandering pit/ghost hole

Postby deice » Thu Feb 02, 2023 7:02 am

gonna be very mildly upset if someone's done this already cause i couldn't find it anywhere
peer inside for a clue: show
Image
the moving hole from smw ghost houses. place it down and use left/right redirector bgos to control the boundaries of its movement.

features of note
  • unhides hidden blocks even if it wasn't the one to hide them
  • does not hide sizeables or blocks which it cannot fully envelop vertically (you can change its height to accommodate for the latter)
  • blocks fully obscured by a pit are not affected by most block-manipulating npcs such as p-switches and snake blocks which may lead to some strange situations
  • blocks immediately to the right of the pit which have graphics that don't take up their entire collision box or have semi-transparent graphics will exhibit minor visual distortions
jank interactions that kinda work but also kinda don't
  • blocks that hurt the player from the side might not work properly if partially obscured by a pit
  • slopes do get obscured by pits as expected, but this absolutely annihilates smbx's slope physics so please handle with care
  • some npcs which require blocks to function may interact with pits in strange ways
  • settings a pit's "speed" config to something very high and enabling horizontal wrap may cause unexpected things to happen
  • multiple holes crossing paths will lead to them fighting over which blocks are hidden. this doesn't cause anything particularly bad to happen but some blocks might appear/disappear early/late.
  • (probably other minor things i missed)

Sorry to burst your bubble deice...

But Core has this in her NPC Pack.

However, your one is actually diferent in the sense that it doesn't have a black bar on it.

i didn't count that one because she's removed it in newer versions of the pack - understandably, as it caused the game to lag horribly and had several collision-related issues as well. (also, might be a nitpick but that one requires layer movement in order to actually move which makes it quite unwieldy)

Wait, what? I didn't know that. Okay then, you did good :D

I don't remember another instance of this npc but since Core's one is out, this one causes to stay! :D

Nice one!

Honestly it doesn't really matter if someone makes multiple versions of the same NPC, either to make an improved version or just because it's fun to make NPCs.

Either way, good work on this.

It just travels left infinitely for me instead of changing direction upon hitting the edge of a platform or the wall

Can someone link Core's pack? I can't find it on my own.

if you mean resizing the npc, then you can do so via npc configurations just like you would with any other npc. if you mean setting the size of each individual pit, then that's not possible.
alternatively, if you mean making it work with sizeable blocks, that's also not possible.
