I have a problem trying to use SMBX 1.4.5. I'm using Windows 7 SP1 on Virtualbox, since my parents don't want me to play it on my host computer. Whenever I start it up, it shows that SMBX init has failed, and that turning off antivirus might fix it. However, the only antivirus material I had was Windows Defender; I turned it off, and it still doesn't work. Am I missing something important?

How it "doesn't work"? Does it show any error on attempt to run a game? Or how it behaves?

Can you not just run it as administrator?

It showed me the same thing, even after running as administrator.

So you do have the right version of Super Mario Bros. X?

It's SMBX 1.4.5. I made sure it was.

Your Super Mario Bros. X root folder needs DirectX 9.0 or newer.

Okay, I've got it downloaded and in the folder. Is there something I should do next?

I see you run a virtual machine. You should enable 3D acceleration, then, you should install VirtualBox guest add-ons (please boot into the safe mode first until install it), and then, try out the thing. However, looks like something blocks the ability to run the executable (antivirus? or permissions setup? Use the Right-mouse-button/properties, then permissions tab, etc.).

If you try to open SMBX 1.4.5 and something keeps you from running it, then you need to disable antivirus protection.
And that's it. You should be able to play this version.

Okay, I'll try it.
Added in 24 minutes 42 seconds:
I disabled all antivirus in Virtual Machine and this happened.

Anyway, why do you play the game on VM?
I tried the game on my Win7 VM (VirtualBox too), game works, but it glitches: has render at the wrong place. On the host Linux Mint and Wine it works just fine.

What seems to be causing the problem, though?

That's just the thing. I don't know exactly what's going on. It seems to me that it's saying I can try disabling antivirus and restarting program, even though I already did, which makes no sense. Even when I turn off Bitdefender's Protection Shield, it says the same thing.

Can you try replacing the original smbx.exe?

Replacing it?
Copying and pasting to SMBX root folder and overwriting the original smbx.exe will work.
...or maybe it probably doesn't?
