Exit This Earth's Atmosphere is an aptly named stage where you go high in the sky until you escape it. With altitude as the theme, you progress upward through cliffs and clouds to reach the stars (one literally).
Fittingly enough, it’s a very atmospheric level. There’s a cloudy haze over the whole thing, just enough to make a filter rather than obscure your view. The music is ambient and mysterious. Fireballs give off a little glow when thrown. It’s effective at creating a whimsical setting.
Most of the platforming challenge comes from beep blocks, flipping between red and blue at even intervals. Their speed varies by section and the timing can be tight for some of them, but they’re generally fair and not too demanding. The one thing to be careful of is not to get crushed by them, as they can kill you if you’re caught in them just right.
The stage uses SMB2 enemies as its main baddies along with Cloud Drops and some of those hurty blocks on moving layers. Cobrats, Beezos, and Pidgits are common and some of them are part of the navigation. The Pidgits fire out of overturned vases like bullets and are occasionally needed for a jump. While there are a few places they could help, I was able to make most of the jumps with enough momentum regardless.
It’s a long level with multiple checkpoints. I don’t recommend taking it on without them as it’s pretty hazardous and power-ups are sparse, but well-paced. Each section felt reasonably challenging to me, and most of my trouble was due to my own blundering. The dangers are crafty, but manageable. It’s a solid stage overall and there’s nothing I would really fault it for.
