You can download Metroid and Super Metroid very cheap on the Wii U (even with save states) compared to the prices on amazon (50€). So I don't understand why you have to get emulators. It's better when you pay 5-8 € instead of doing illegal things.

Now before saying, "Well, Nintendo has copyrighted the characters," think about this: the old video games aren't sold anymore, and since Nintendo no longer makes money off of them, then the emulators are doing nothing actually harmful. Nintendo says it's illegal to make money off of Nintendo content (which is a little bit of a piss-off for Mario Game LPers), but since emulators don't make money off of Nintendo content, and the fact that they can't emulate modern 3D games well (if at all), which is what the current consumer enjoys, then Nintendo has nothing to worry about.

Virtual Console. They can still get pissed at you for playing their old games.

This can be related to SMBX. Redigit wasn't earning money from SMBX, and yet Nintendo still shut down Redigit's game, even if your argument about playing games on emulators as long as they aren't being sold for money, then this is just not right.

Every goddamn person on the Internet (this is hyperbole, mind you) uses emulators. Especially if you own the game/are playing a romhack it's a completely victimless crime. I do not think that emulating/pirating games that are easily obtainable in the modern day is right, though. But if you're going to emulate a game that is not widely available (widely available includes Virtual Console, an excellent idea from Nintendo) or one that you already own for some other purpose, I don't think there's anything ethically wrong with that. This is just my opinion on the matter.

Play Super Metroid, Metroid Prime Trilogy and Metroid Fusion and you'll think otherwise. You can't review a game series when you didn't even play it.

The game is a bit linear but it's really fun and the storyline and the surprising events are really awesome. It's the 4th best metroid game in my opinion.
