Hello there! This is technically my first ever completed episode, which was made over the period of working on and off over a few years (started sometime around MAGLX3?)
Obviously, this is only compatible with 2.0, and I think Beta 4 specifically. I've been using SMBX for many, many years, and this was my first true completed project, which I finished last year. I intended to post it here earlier, but I'm only just getting around to it now. Seeing as how this was made over as long as it is, it's far from perfect, and definitely increases in quality as it goes on, as I got better at making levels and such. Despite its faults, I decided to post it, since I'd like to make more episodes related to it later on. If anyone ever tries it, any form of advice or criticism would be appreciated, so I can know what to do better next time!
TRAILER
STORY
Wario and Waluigi are living their completely normal lives. Wario has no game making or treasure hunting to be doing right now, so he's simply resting. This all changes when a Toad arrives at their door with a surprise: Wario has won the greediest man alive award, which is a huge two million coins. However, before he can claim his prize, Bowser arrives, and kidnaps the Toad, hoping to claim the money for himself, for some purpose. Wario sets out to gather stars so he can break through Bowser's magical gate, and take back what's his.
FEATURES
Playable Wario
27 levels
A hub that constantly plays the pause music from Wario World
I had a bit of a problem here, earlier into making this I was taking it far less seriously, and had no intentions of sharing it anywhere, so I didn't really think to memorize the people who made all the graphics. I've done my best to work out as many of them as I can, but I'm 100% sure I've missed some, so if anyway ever tries this out and recognizes any graphics by someone I haven't listed here, please let me know!
here's what I have so far:
Mudkip
PROX
Darkonius
Lx Xzit
WerewolfGD
Squishy Rex
Enjl
Mb12
Shocker
Bumpty
Hey!
So, I recently played your game "Wario's Quest", and I'd like to review it here (because I like to review games :>)
1. PRESENTATION :
Overall, the game looks good ! It's nothing outstanding though, as most of the tiles used are the ones already available in SMBX2, and sometimes tiles are used in a weird way, especially in the hub, where you have semi-solids from different themes in the same room. I know they're here to represent the world theme, but it just looks a bit off, if you ask me.
Regarding the soundtrack, all the musics used are great and matches perfectly the levels they're in !
And finally, the story is okay. Nothing to really say here
2. LEVEL DESIGN :
The level design is surely the biggest problem i have with Wario's Quest.
Most of the levels just feels like they weren't made with Wario's abilities in mind.
Wario is a very slow character, but he can get faster by using his "shoulder attack". The thing is, the levels are mostly made of narrow platforms, which forces the player to slow down to not miss these platforms. It wouldn't have been a big deal if there was only a few of them in the levels, but when there is only narrow platforms, it just makes the game very slow and difficult in a bad way.
On top of that, there is a lack of checkpoints. Levels can be long to complete, and yet have no checkpoints, and since they're quite difficult to go through, you'll die quite a lot. And so, you'll have to go through these long levels again, which is very frustrating.
The levels themselfs aren't very intresting and bland to be honest. Most of them don't really have a proper theme (outside of the aestetic) or a special mechanic. It's mostly just a bunch of platforming challenge, which is fine, but it can get very repetitive, and makes them a bit forgettable.
3. BOSSES :
The bosses are okay. Their visual design are intresting and original, but their mechanics are, for most of them, the same. Basically, they throw you stuff and you have to throw them bombs or shy guys back. I mean, it's not that a big deal, but it can get very repetitive. And once again, they weren't made with Wario's abilities in mind, you can just ground pound them to kill them instantly, which makes them totally pointless.
4. VERDICT :
Overall, "Wario's Quest" is a decent game, but it feels a bit unpolished. It lacks a proper identity, suffers from a sometimes messy and frustrating level design and has bosses that shares the same mechanics.

I give it a 6,5/10.
Thank you for your feedback! Many of the issues you have I completely agree with, and are things I am aiming to improve on with my next project. Being my first completed episode, which was done over 2 and a half years, with different mindsets and skill at actually making levels over that time period, the lack of polish and coherency comes mainly from there. Some levels skipping checkpoints entirely was out of both me being lazy and simply forgetting them; which is something I'll admit I should have fixed before. You're right about levels and bosses being not really designed with Wario in mind, I hadn't made anything with him before, only Mario, so especially early on that's obvious.
I appreciate you taking the time to give this a try, I'll definitely keep what you've said in mind for future reference, too

I've seen some glimpses of your next project on Twitter, and it looks great ! Can't wait for it !
