Yo! it's been a VERY long time since i posted here but anyways.

I've been trying to access the level editor of SMBX 1.4.4 but it kept showing me this error


so i tried downloading the latest version, aka SMBX 1.4.5 but FOR SOME REASON it shows the same error despite being freshly downloaded. Like i don't get why this is happening

I believe i did something when i was tidying my documents folders time ago but the fact that even in the new version is showing this error kind of invalidates that theory.
I tried looking up this error to see if anyone was having it but with no results so i had no choice but to ask for help here.

While this forum (and myself) mainly uses SMBX2, I think I might be able to help a bit:

Before I start, I'll be referring to the 1.4.X series as SMBX38A, as it is a completely separate, incompatible engine to what Legacy SMBX (1.3) and SMBX2 uses, so many of the bugs will be completely separated. The name comes from the developer's username.

I googled the error code and it appears to be the result of some DLLs being missing, What's most likely is that you are missing a component that SMBX38A wants. Since it happened on both times you attempted to use two separate versions, it can't be that one of the downloads was corrupted. Try putting your SMBX38A folder on your desktop. Try running it as an administrator (right click and click run as administrator) to see if that fixes the error. Also make sure that you have the latest version of the .NET framework installed. Since SMBX38A uses the VB6, have you updated the runtime to the latest version?

Also, there's a dedicated 38A forum at the Wohlsoft forums where you probably won't be shouted at for using your version. The 1.4 stuff is also referred to as SMBX38A (or 38A for short) They should probably know WAY more than me, and it would be a great idea to ask on there if none of my solutions work. If in doubt, I'm pretty sure that you can use PGE with the 1.4.X series. It's generally a better editor and you probably(?) won't need to do those. You'll need to download a configuration pack, however, and I don't know whether testing works. Once again, I don't really use SMBX38A so I might have gotten something wrong.

Just my two cents regarding some stuff in here!

1. While X2 is indeed incompatible with 38A just as it is with 1.3 since X2 has different NPCs, 1.3 can still be played in 38A as long you don't use any of the exclusive stuff that is in 38A. There might be some issues, but nothing beats the Jank Redigit added in OG Smbx.

2. No one is gonna shout at anyone for not using X2 but rather 38A here. Sure the past had some issues here and there, but these times are over as Content Sharing of 38A is even allowed on the Discord Server of this Forum here!

3. You can use PGE with 38A, I tried it myself but the current PGE Version doesn't have the support for the current Version of 38A! It can still work but there are some stuff that is missing in PGE that 38A has!

Not true, you can use PGE to convert it back to 1.3. If you have any 38A-only features, they get removed in the conversion.

Okay sure, that is possible, but it's awkward, and it's still worth a warning that the game will automatically overwrite the level with its own version.

It's perhaps a little exaggerated, though it was to point out that it's not an internal conversion but an active rewriting of files. You can't get the original file back once it happens, you can, however, re-convert back to 1.3, though I don't know if anything will be lost at any point in the process.

Sorry about anything I managed to get wrong. That "version shouting" misconception was likely the result a couple of flame wars I saw while lurking.
