iOS theoretically can be supported by TheXTech and Moondust (former PGE), BUT, the platform generally sucks for non-commercial developers:
- Development requires the macOS computer
- Legal distribution requires AppStore
- To get the ability to distribute software via AppStore, you should pay $100 per year, that's very expensive (7341 Rubles, you can buy, for example, 77 2-liter bottles of Coca-Cola)
- Pre-moderation at AppStore is a big pain for iOS developers because Apple moderators were often rejected applications from submission with no explained reason
- Need a hardware thing to verify the actual workflow on the device, they cost very expensive, even, DAMN, on Avito second-hand market, that sucks
- With the iPhone simulator it's possible to verify the general runtime on the Xcode, but still, need real hardware to verify other workflow things
- Limited file system will require a much trickier way to load custom levels/episodes/assets, which completely breaks a general idea of SMBX to be a game for custom episodes/levels/assets provided. Otherwise, that will require the sort of the server repository and the catalog where the user can download assets and/or episodes for them, and that is not actually what we need, especially if we want to play episodes we have on our computers. So, this will require the JailBreak to be installed to make the game being able to implement this idea without the pain. The only thing you can get by the easiest way is the playable game with pre-packed assets and default episodes only, nothing also.
Android is one great and convenient platform that allows keeping the general SMBX idea work normally: you can put game assets/episodes anywhere you want, you can replace/update them as you want freely, etc. The game already works on a dozen of phones, tablets, game consoles (for example, Retroid Pocket), and even smart TVs!
