And does it have to be specific to Nintendo-themed games? Or something in that general style, but with new characters, for example?

Well... let me ask this: If the ability existed to create an SMBX- or SMR-like game, but to do everything from scratch using OpenGL or DirectX for Windows, what would you change in the game? In the design? What would you want it to do that it doesn't do presently? What's on your dream list?
I'm considering doing this. I have a prototype engine that uses Yoshi and many Super Mario components. I've been watching SMBX and SMR long play videos and it's been quite motivating.
