Nova Boss Contest (2.0/38A)

Welcome guys to the first Nova Boss Contest. This contest was planned and approved back in October 2020 and now the time has come for its arrival.
The contest is hosted by The Novaverse and its gimmick is as you guessed it, creating bosses.

Participating in this contest doesn't require you to be anonymous with your submissions so you can showcase them all you want, you can even upload them after the contest finishes its deadline.

Both SMBX2 Beta 4 and SMBX 38A (1.4.5) are allowed
Up to 4 submissions allowed (2 submissions per side, example 2 submissions for 2.0 and 2 for 38A which makes the total of 4 submissions).
The judges won't compete.
Team-ups/collabs allowed (up to max 4 people). (If you team up with someone and they submit the level, it still counts as your submission which means you can't submit 4 submissions by yourself and then participate in more)

Not a rule but contest is not anonymous, you can showcase your progress everywhere and release the level(boss) once deadline is over.

This contest offers both fame(trophies that if you earn, you can put in your signature containing your submission's name) and glory (some rewards).

Let's start out with the rewards.
Participating in the contest gives you the optional rewards of having a painting in the HUB area of your choice and having your name be written in the HUB's hall of fame.
Winning the contest will grant you the reward of having a custom boss of your desire be created for you that will also be a part of the NBC's episode.

Now, for fame we have several trophies.
- 3rd place Trophy, earned by scoring 3rd place in either the 2.0 or 38A side of the contest.

- 2nd place Trophy, earned by scoring 2nd place in either the 2.0 or 38A side of the contest.

- 1st place Trophy, earned by scoring 1st place in either the 2.0 or 38A side of the contest.

- Best Boss Arena/Stage Trophy, earned by having the best arena or stage of your boss battle (Can be earned only once).

- Best Execution Trophy, earned by having the best execution of a boss battle (Can be earned only once).

- Best Innovation Trophy, earned by having the best innovative boss battle or to be exact, most creative boss battle (Can be earned only once).

These trophies will not only be given as signature eyecandy but will also be placed in the HUB where your submissions will reside.
Submissions cannot earn 2 or more unique trophies (Best Boss Arena/Execution/Innovation), only one unique trophy and one place trophy.


The Guild refers to the team of this contest. For the judges, we have:

Here is the judges rubric used for this contest:

Boss Design = 40 points (The design of the boss battle, it's basically the core of the boss, how is the boss design, how are his attacks designed, is the boss enjoyable)
Boss Arena = 20 points (The design of the arena and how it helps the player navigate through the boss)
Flashiness(Cutscenes/Dialogue, Effects, HP Boss meter/Music/Sound effects and other stuff) = 20 points (All the side stuff that make a boss feel complete)
Difficulty/Lenght = 20 points (Is the boss too hard or too easy, is the boss too long or too short)
Overall Score = 100 Points

You can submit your submissions either as a reply to this topic or the NVS Discord server. Please make sure you test your submissions that they work properly.
Disqualification will be handed to bosses that can't be beaten by normal means (requires cheating to beat the boss), bosses that do not work (basically unplayable bosses) or bosses that do not fit enough of the criteria to be classified as boss.

The submission must have an obstacle that has a clear identity and form (even if its only present in the background), example, a submission that has its boss be the arena/stage itself is allowed as long as its distinct enough to be recognized as a boss (the judges decide that) but a submission that has its boss be described figuratively but not present in any shape or form will be disqualified, additionally, a boss stage that feels more like a level than beating a boss will also not count (one example of this would be designing a long autoscroll section and the boss being this unbeatable enemy that keeps attacking you, while generally, autoscroll bosses are allowed like the final boss of NSMBWii, if it feels like the stage itself has a bigger presence than the boss and plays a more major role than the boss itself, the judges might decide to disqualify the level).

It also comes down to how the judges personally feel regarding each submission trying to do unique things instead of a traditional boss battle.

But that said, feel free to experiment, try out new things and have fun! This contest is meant more like trying out a new experience rather than raw competition. If you want to discuss the contest with other participants and get feedback and such, you can join the NVS Discord server.
