Note: It's impossible to tell how good people are if they don't record any footage of them playing.
This list is only correct as far as visible evidence shows. It's very possible that the community has some hidden talent!

Note: this list is based purely on results or strong enough evidence to suggest they were the best player during this time period.
I made this list because this is something ShadowStarX is probably interested in.
2020 - Present: Cato or 55jedat555
After Eclipsed and MECHDRAGON took a hiatus for SMBX speedrunning, Cato was able to pick up some 2k1x speedrunning.
However, it's unclear if Cato would also do really well using normal SMBX physics and they're really not interested since 2k1x physics are better.
55jedat555 as a result of making his kaizo levels is probably really good at SMBX but not sure how good due to lack of speedrun results in general.
Due to these two issues above, there's no really good way to compare these two players.
Consistency is an issue for me when speedrunning. It took me almost half a year (September to January) to speedrun the entirety of Subzero Heroes. I often made mistakes (by hitting a wall, missing a jump or not knowing what to do at the instant), but I did come up with strategies to break personal records.

For non-speedrunning, I just enjoy beating the level fast so that I don't have to make an hour-long video. It really depends on the design of the levels.

There is also the point that people also tend to be better at levels they make then most other people. Also, Comparing different physics does not make sense to me. Wish we could have an Online SMBX battle mode contest to settle stuff like this. Skill does not come from speed-running alone. Some speed-runners can be good at the games they speedrun, but bad at playing casually. Subzero Heros is not the only thing that uses the "Physics Patch" either.

Eh Eclipsed I'd say you're cleary the best player regardless if you're active on speedrunning or not

What exactly is being measured? Technical skill? Endurance/patience when faced with a challenge? Reflexes? Is it more important to beat levels with few deaths intuitively, beat difficult levels, or practice levels to beat them quickly by these metrics? Seems a bit unclear so far. Not sure how to easily separate those.

2013 - 2014: Redacted
Started focusing hard on youtube content and as a result was able to pickup a lot of SMBX tech such as the double block hit
Didn't he like clearly always abuse the glitches and bugs of SMBX in his Videos though? Also he tried very hard to like kill every npc get all coins and basically defeated the bosses by holding an Item right next to them making it very easy to kill them (Thank god we have the Blocks to prevent this)

"kill every npc get all coins" - that's my playstyle also, which is why I'm a very slow player

Imagine if the actual best player was not even in the community.
