Aren't all SMBX levels side-scrollers? I know you mean auto-scroller...just having fun.
Make a level that sounds the most fun to you. You start with the one from that list which makes you the most excited, then move to the next, then the next. Soon you have an episode made out of all the levels on your list.
Start with an SMB3 length (short) level and expand it if you feel the level's gimmick has more to offer.
Firey Paper Mario, Cedur and Disaster Master, you guys had me at "a level that I feel like doing"!
Firey, sorry, but I don't even know what Mortal Kombat is!
Cedur, I will put all my efforts to make all levels for me and the rest of the community!
And, Disaster Master, yes: I meant autoscroll, but to the side (so, I thought it's name was sidescrollers, but NO!).
