Footstep sound effects?

Postby 0gre_uthere » Mon Dec 28, 2020 6:54 am

I am creating a sort of realistic linear episode. By 'realistic' I mean like better sound design lol, The music has ambience behind it and for the sound effects I am using real life sounds, I basically wanted this to be unique lol.
But I was just wondering if it was possible to have footstep sound effects in SMBX, like, if the player was to make Mario walk, an array of individual footsteps would play and for each level I would change it. Grass footstep for grass and footsteps on concrete if he was in a castle etc.
This may be a stretch and honestly this probably isn't possible, but I may as well ask and see if it could be done in a way?
Thank you.

It's possible, but the game doesn't inherently know when a "step" happens. I've detected them before by checking for a change in the player animation frame while the player is on the ground, but there's a bit of nuance that goes into this, especially when you have to maintain lists of blocks that make different sounds.
