Pleasant Plains

A custom level I did when I was bored. The actual design took a few hours, I spent quite some time polishing it though.

It was made to experiment with a different way of designing levels: making both the blocks and NPC placement at the same time, and only adding custom GFX/music later.

They are actually flashing question blocks inspired by SMB1.

Review - Pleasant Plains by Aeon

Well, let's get started shall we?

Design - 10/10

I enjoyed the design of this level. the level was full of slopes, which is good in a grassland level. I like the way you added BGOs and other stuff to give the level a more pleasant feel. I must admit,e level made me feel more at peace with myself and others. This level is so fucking good, man.

Music - 10/10

I don't know how or where you got the music, but it's very fitting and it made the level more enjoyable. I enjoyed listening to the music as it was rather peacful and made the level more pleasant, hence the title. The way you used these musics in your level amazed me. Keep up the good work.

CGFX: 8/10

I must admit, I enjoyed the graphics very much. i like the way you used SMW style graphics and change them to look more SMB3. I call this style-shifting, and I love it when people use this effectively. But I didn't like the question blocks very much. I found them a little distracting and I kept on dying when they were in view. after a few tries I managed to get used to the flashing and was able to complete the level. I am just saying that the question blocks are very distracting to me and it doesn't make the level look much nicer.

NPC Placement - 5/5

I loved the way you placed the NPCs. I your placements were formidable, but fair. You added to the difficuly by placing your NPCs effectively. I must admit this level would be crap if this were different. Well done.

Total Score: 33/35

Final Score: 9.4/10

Grade: A[sup]+[/sup]

Position: Best Levels Section!!!

Overview

This is one of the best levels along with the best scores i've ever given. I like the way you added NPCs, BGOs and CGFX to give the level a more pleasant feel. Savour this moment, you deserve the score.

Peace!

I want to burn Fabman's review. Here's mine:

Generally speaking, this definetly looks like something you can come up with in
Aeon wrote:a few hours,
as it's a very straightforward grassland level. Since you didn't specify, I'll go with World 1 difficulty standards, as this is a grassland level and we stick to the classic formula.

First off, I want to point out that you can go over the top once you exit the pipe, going to the goal tape part of the first section. This is a little thing which you can fix when you want. I'm sure it was done because you got lazy near the end or something, which is fine.

The first thing which stood out to me was the music. Although I didn't know that this remix existed, I immediately recognized it once I started the level. I do not like this remix, and I honestly think that there's better music you can use in a calm grassland level like this. The music made me hurry, while the name implies that the player should take his time and enjoy life. Same thing goes for the cave music. I'd be totally down with this music choice if your level was an adventuring cave level, but as this is not the case, it felt out of place. Don't get me wrong: I like Kirby music, too. But in this case, something different might be better. You might even find another good tune from a Kirby game, as there is tons of variety.

I see a lot of people use this SMB3 recoloured SMW thing, and while I don't like it, I can't complain. The odd shading makes the enemies stick out a bit, which makes the player notice them enough to plan their movements, and while they don't essentially look pretty in the environment, the custom grass tileset and changed BGOs make up for it. The trees, however.
XuticX wrote:the trees are best imo.
These, exactly. They did not fit. They felt awkward and out of place. Not only because they're giant trees next to 32x64 SMB1 Trees, but also because they have the wrong colours. They're too turquise for the environment, which one can tell from the screens. I wasn't a fan of the flashing blocks, either. Just flashing would've been fine, but the flashing and rotating is pretty distracting, like Fabman said.

Design-wise this level is okay. Nothing special. It's of SMW-level length, which is fine, but didn't offer any secret areas to find, which I found disappointing. I'm used to levels with Kirby music having secret areas. The NPC placement was another thing which bugged me, as there are too many at once for grassland-world-1-ish-level standards. You especially spammed the rexes when there were sizeables around.

Overall, it was a nice little level, but easily forgettable. Here are my scores:
Music: 1/2 Like I said, didn't fit perfectly.
Graphics: 2/3 There are some flaws, but nothing big. Enough for the 2/3.
Design: 2/5 There was nothing special to the design. Really, nothing, which made it forgettable. The lack of secret areas binds into all this.

Overall you get a 5/10, which is okay. Nice job for a few hours only. Could use some gimmicks and hidden areas!

Funny thing is I was the first person to review this level, I did it last night as part of my Level Judge app. I'll post it here later.

Anyways, let's have a review party!

Lol. Dah, fuck it. I'll post it now.

Pleasant Plains - Aeon

Graphics: 7/10

The graphics choice for this level was really decent. I loved the style it gave as an actual plains level, and then oes underground for a moment or two. The tileset choice for the underground was fairly well picked, and I really liked that part the most. Could be better, but it's still great.

Enemies/Placement: 6/10

The choice for Ninji's I really didn't quite understand, especially where most of the were placed on the edges, you have to really time your jump to thiers in order to not die/lose life. I would suggest placing them one tile inside, instead of right on the edge. Also I would've liked to see more than just three enemies underground! other than that, enemy placement is okay.

Style/Asthetics: 8/10

I really loved the layout of this level, like I mentioned above, the graphics choice for this level is part of that reason. You did a lot good with this level's layout however there were some parts that could use a little more work. I would loved to see an expansion on the underground part, as I thought it was way too short and prooved pointless to add. I also had a hard time jumping to the springboard underground, since you had to time the jump right on the edge. Everything else was just icing on the cake! Good job!

Items/.etc: 7/10

While I saw no stars throughout the level (maybe it wasn't made for that kind of thing) I did see a few other things. I noticed you had only fire flowers, as well as only few of them. I did manage to die once because of this. I maybe collected 3 or 4 fire flowers and that's all. Perhaps a different choice of item might of helped? Just a suggestion. Items otherwise were OK. Good work.

Overall: 7/10

I really had fun with this level overall. I thought it was great material, however the few things I mentioned could be helpful if fixed. I really like your style and I look forward to playing more of your levels!
