The mystery contest runs from November 23rd until December 21th, 2AM EST (8AM GMT+1)

The contest's theme is
Solving a problem!
To clarify, your level should feature some kind of problem being solved as its main idea. This can mean a puzzle or mystery in a story-rich environment, an action-packed rush to resolve some kind of disaster, finding an inventive and fun new way to use an underused game mechanic, or whatever else you can come up with! Stretch the meaning as far as you like.

SUBMISSION
Please refer to the submissions thread for submission guidelines. If you have any questions about them, post them HERE and NOT in the submissions thread!

Further info about the contest in the spoiler tags below:

RULES
Spoiler: show
- This level contest has a theme, meaning the levels will be scored based on how well they adhere to that theme, as well as how fun they are.
- The results and an episode with all the levels will be released on December 25th
- You can submit as many levels as you want as long as they are your own and adhere with the theme
- Teams are allowed, cooperation is encouraged
- SMBX38A is disallowed. The most recent version of SMBX2 is encouraged.
- You may use lua, any characters you like, and any exit types you like. Bowser end game flags will be brutally removed.
- You may have up to 0 secret exits. Please use Dragon Coins, Star Coins or SMW Stars for hiding secrets instead. Excess exits will be brutally removed for the episode.
- Please make sure your music paths work.
- You may not use palace switches.
- Disqualifications will be handed out if....
-- It's very obvious that no attempt was made
-- The level is not by the author
-- The level is unbeatable or unreasonably difficult
-- The level contains crude or offensive content
LUA RULES
Spoiler: show
- Please try to avoid warning popups. They're tedous to click through and make dying in the level frustrating!
- Test your level for lua errors. They're even more tedious, and maybe breaking!!!
- To avoid GameData and SaveData conflicts, initialize them as such:

Code: Select all

SaveData[Level.filename()] = SaveData[Level.filename()] or {}
GameData[Level.filename()] = GameData[Level.filename()] or {}

local saveData = SaveData[Level.filename()]
local gameData = GameData[Level.filename()]
JUDGING
Spoiler: show
- There is only one judge, and it's the person typing this.
- Levels will be scored on a scale from 0 to 10 based on fun and adherence to the theme.
- The average of the cumulative score of all levels will be used to determine the quality of a community trophy.
TROPHY REWARDS
Spoiler: show
- All participants cooperate to make outstanding levels that earn trophy rewards, and to increase the level of the community trophy by aiming for high scores.
- Trophies will be awarded based on stand-out performances, be it "highest score", "best story", "best aesthetics", "most funny" or anything else suitable. Even levels that get a low score can contribute to the pool by being remarkable and earning a trophy.
- Every trophy will be visually designed as a little nugget you can put into your signature. A little something to tell your future kids about.
- A single level can obtain multiple trophies.
- Every trophy will increase the community trophy's average score, contributing to a more flashy and grand result.
Now get designing!

A quick question about trophies. Will they function like they do on the SMW Central forums? Or is the "Every trophy will be visually designed as a little nugget you can put into your signature." literal, and you'll just receive an image in PMs of a little trophy that you can add to your forum signature? I apologize if this question is dumb, but I'm a bit confused. Thanks in advance!

For now it's like userbars. If it's a smash hit I might spend a weekend making it like smwcentral.

As long as your switch state doesn't carry across levels, everything's gouda.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES UPDATE
I have added the following sentence to the submission guidelines, after seeing the first submission:
In order for your level to be scored, I need to be able to download it. In order for it to do well, it must not have been uploaded to mediafire.
Please make use of the subforum's purpose of testing & feedback to ensure your level can be played! I won't run after people after the deadline asking them to change their downloads. Failure to make your level downloadable is, as they say, "your loss".
I'll compile a Wall of Shame for attempted submissions that were undownloadable, and mediafire uploads.

What's wrong with Mediafire? Any preferred file upload services then.

Must have had a very bad time with Judging the Chocolate Contest then though it does force people to switch to a different download service.

That reminds me, just so I'm sure, this is a Chocolate or Vanilla contest, correct? As far as I know, it wasn't specified, so I thought it was either/or.

As long as your level conforms with the rules, anything goes.

Google Drive, Dropbox, MEGA, there are plenty of places better than MediaFire.

Does a compilation of puzzles count as "some kind of problem being solved as its main idea"?

I don't mean to annoy but I really need an answer for this one since the level I'm working on might not fit otherwise and time is of essence.
