SMBX2 button contrast

Postby mechamind » Mon Oct 19, 2020 11:40 am

If these are the normal colors, I am surprised it hasn't been addressed yet. Possibly a "repeat" topic, but still an important one.

Finally getting into a different version of SMBX after sticking to 1.3.0.1 for years (with a little 38A as well), I had trouble selecting an episode. Then while looking everywhere I could think of, I found some buttons on the lower left, one of which was the episode selector. I was lucky to find the level selector before that.

The problem for me was that the buttons are light blue on a light blue background. I would have an easier time if the buttons were a different color such as red (maybe a somewhat "cooler" #C00020 for a light blue background).

At least I know for sure where the buttons are now...unless someone moves them in a later version of SMBX2.

While they may be blue against a paler blue background, I'm having trouble working out why you couldn't see them. They were tested with different forms of colour blindness to ensure they were always visible, since the brightness of their respective blues is significantly different. If you are aware of a specific form of colour blindness you experience, would you let me know which so I can double check it under those conditions? If not, could you provide a screenshot of your launcher to make sure it's working correctly? No-one else seems to have had any trouble finding the buttons, and they appear to be clearly visible, even under colour blind conditions.

Then it might be that the light blue buttons are on the corners of the screen. If it was blue-on-blue in the middle of the screen, I would have found it quickly as it's easier to focus on that area (though that's not necessarily to say the buttons should be moved there). If the corner buttons were red or another color that stands out, I would be more likely to look there to see what I can do with SMBX. Doing both at once was too much for me.

I'm honestly a little confused. It's not like the launcher is constantly in motion or you have to react fast - of course there's going to be important elements everywhere on the window, otherwise there would be no point in the window being that large.

And on that point, the window shouldn't be filling your screen - it's set up to scale with your monitor so that it sits nicely in the middle of the screen, rather than filling it entirely.
