Me from 13 years ago definitely counts a couple dozen more deaths on those when compared to the regular version. The same argument you made can be made for any kind of comet. But that's their purpose - an altered challenge that doesn't cost much development resources.

Yeah, you're right about the purpose of the comets. I still think they're not much harder, though. Maybe that's just me.

I mean, they would've been so much better if they were in more levels. I also wish they affected every enemy.

Cosmic Luigi and Purple coins in the Bone Pen: Hello there
I was talking about the fast foes comets in particular, in case you were lacking context.
Anyway, I remember watching videos about Galaxy 1 before I got the game, and I was dreading having to do Purple Coins in the Bone Pen. To my surprise, it only took me a few tries. Maybe I fluked it, though. I'm confused on what you mean by cosmic luigi, though. Are you talking about the comets where you race a clone of yourself?

Yep, playing as Luigi results in cosmic comet races being more difficult

Huh, I actually didn't notice. Then again, I have only done the one in Honyhive Galaxy with Luigi so far.

I also forgot about this one damn level in Paper Mario Sticker Star. I freaking hate that one level in World 5 where you're being chased by a fucking giant Cheep Cheep while rafting. And if you survive that hell, it's sometimes hard to get to 1 of the exits.
