Boss Tower

Postby Phazon1111 » Fri May 16, 2014 3:33 pm

This is my first level ever EVER submitted to the forums. This level is based on 7-2 from Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland, the music is also from that game. It is a boss rush of every default boss in SMBX. This level will be 8-1 in my project. (Level not final though, but I plan to at least have a similar level)

...I appreciate you trying to create some nostalgia, but this is a bit appalling, sorry. I'll just say, you should definitely add background objects to your boss stages. And don't be afraid to add more gimmicks - your boss levels are just like saying, "Okay, Mario, hit Mouser four times, the Koopalings and Boom-Boom three times - oh yeah, you have Wart over there, that's five hits, and Bowser! Wow!" Also, using this as 8-1 isn't really fitting, unless it's solely based on bosses. I would recommend you make it a special level, or a level that requires a certain number of stars to access. Otherwise, now that I can see what you are capable of with boss rushes, try making a normal level.

Well, I didn't say the level was final. Also, did you think the boss descriptions were funny? I hope so. :D I also wonder why you think the level should be secret.

I played through this, and it's not a bad level. The graphics part was fine (the boss rooms could use some polish, though, as some of them look empty), and the bosses themselves aren't bad.

Overall it works nicely for what it was made for, but I'd say the bosses definitely needed some innovation. It's pretty much the same as how the bosses were originally fought, without much changes. It could even work well on the nostalgia factor, but it makes the gameplay a bit uninteresting, as the player most likely know all of the bosses's patterns, and there are no real changes on how they are fought. I strongly recommend spicing it up a bit; even some small changes to the arena could help making it more interesting (adding conveyors to the Boom Boom battle, for example).

Overall: Ambivalent

This is good, but aeon is right. The boss rooms are mostly empty...Still, a great level. Good music, good graphics, no bugs, good job!

Boss Tower by Phazon1111

Looks and Atmosphere

There wasn't really much to this. Near to no BGOs or scenery except in the rooims between bosses (which all looked the same). The rooms were styled to the places the bosses appeared in, but personally, I would've used underground blocks for Birdo so it's not the exact same room for him (her?) and Mouser. But they were all just giant, bland rectangular rooms without any decoration to them, which looks really boring. There also was cutoff in the SMB1 Bowser room.
The music fit pretty well, I only think it was a bit too monotone with that one song playing the whole time.
So, Looks and Atmosphere gets a

2.5/10

Gameplay and Design (counts double)

You didn't really put much effort into designing the boss rooms. They're all just rectangular and open. Some interesting layout could've helped make the vanilla bosses a bit unique. I also didn't really like the Wart layout, since in the original, the Nightmare machine was under Wart, so you had to get up, throw a veggie, and then go down to dodge. The way it is right now, it's just boring. And that can be said for every boss. They're just boring since I've already fought them so many times. It just feels like this was just thrown together without much thought put into.
So, Gameplay and Design gets a

1.5/10

Verdict

This level isn't really that much fun, it's all just bosses that the average SMBX player ha salready fought so many times. If you wanna try another boss/boss rush, I'd recommend either changing the layouts and changing the bosses looks and some attributes via custom GFX and NPC codes aswell as change the layout a bit or make completely custom bosses. So, my final verdict for this is

1,83/10
