Me and FanofSMBX just got into a discussion about this and I kinda want everyone to know that this is a thing sooo...

This is a little tutorial on how to use the "Custom Music" (levels) and "Level Filename" (worlds) fields in a different way, including a few examples.

Everybody knows that entering "leveltest.lvl" in the Level Filename window on the world map will cause the specific level to load once that level has been entered. But this only works if the .wld and .lvl file are in the same directory. Or does it?
You see, these 2 previously mentioned text fields use the windows explorer to navigate and find your file. With that knowledge, it's possible to have levels/music in entirely different directories and still load them! Here's how it goes:
Imagine a directory like this:
C:\\SMBX\worlds\thirtydaysuntilillcommitsudoku\level_1\level_1.lvl
We'll try to assign a level to a specific level icon on the world map. The level is in the subfolder level_1, the world map is in the folder thirtydaysuntilillcommitsudoku. To access the level, you type the following into your "Level Filename":

\level_1\level_1.lvl

Entering this makes the program search in the sub-directory "level_1". This works the same way for music files (just be sure to not use .lvl extensions).

Here's another example; this time we'll assign a music file to a level. Imagine these 2 directories:
C:\\sickasstunes\fav\hourlongmetallicamix.mp3
C:\\SMBX\levels_designed\derpleveljokes\level.lvl

You can make SMBX load hourlongmetallicamix.mp3 by entering the following into the "Custom Music" field:
C:\\sickasstunes\fav\hourlongmetallicamix.mp3

This makes the program search in the directory above. If you share the level, though, make sure to either include the music file somewhere or change it :P

That's it. This is just a little feature which might be useful for, for example, organizing your episode folders. You can, for example, have one folder for levels using SMB1 graphics only, one for SMB2 graphics etc. Or you could, when hosting a collab, sort them by author. I'm sure there are more ways, but these are up to you to find out.

Special mention
FanofSMBX - Some of these things and the idea to share it.

I'd like to note that this means you can cut down on redundant custom graphics - have a bunch of cave levels that have darkened graphics? Just put the levels in one folder with the custom graphics!

Problem by folder paths on SMBX Episodes

Postby bossedit8 » Fri May 16, 2014 1:38 pm

Problem is if you are doing this and it is gonna play on the real SMBX Episode, it will glitch out the % on your save files way too much. It will definetly jump over 100% and goes for like for a unreasonable 1000% which means you will never know if you defeated the game 100%.

I don't see how this is a problem since in SMW, where this Startup Screen system originated, it didn't count the percentage either, but the levels. I presonally never pay attention to this counter so I wouldn't care :P

Eh, it may be a problem in terms of star-based episodes, but with others it's not always accurate anyways (at least, in my experience).

Very cool find, though. I already knew that you could take it one level deeper than normal (like if it's in episode-style format and the music's in a level's folder, you could put "level\music.mp3" in the box) because ToB3 is actually set up that way, but I didn't know you could go beyond that.

Also, I've noticed that it works with both kinds of slashes. I haven't tested that any deeper than how ToB3 did it, but I've gotten it to work with both.

Although I knew about this similar to how Chad knew about this, I'm bumping it to ask a simple question: is it possible to have the directory lead outside of the subfolder?

Example: the directory is SMBX/WORLDS/EPISODE/LEVEL1, with the level being in the LEVEL1 folder, but the custom song being in the EPISODE folder. Alternatively, there's another directory that's SMBX/WORLDS/EPISODE/LEVEL2, and I want a warp to lead from a level in LEVEL1 to a level in LEVEL2. Also, I want to be able to share the episode. Would this be possible?
