Introduction

Welcome to the Mafia thread!
Mafia (also called The Werewolf Game) is a bluffing and detection game which pits an informed minority (the Mafia) against an uninformed majority (the townspeople). The game is played in a single thread and it cycles through day and night "phases", which last a day or two each. People who play the game are assigned a "role" at the beginning which determines which team they are on. If they are in the Mafia, they will know the identity of the other Mafia members and agree on who to kill each night phase. If they are a townsperson, they will not know anybody, and each day phase they will all vote on who they think should be lynched. But be warned - the Mafia will be voting each day phase as well.

It appears a very straightforward townspeople versus Mafia battle until you realize that the townspeople don't know who anybody is. They don't know who to trust. They have to use their wits to determine who is in the Mafia, and who they should vote for. Instant Messenger interrogations take place, with high-speed questions from high-strung townspeople. People form and break alliances, while the Mafia members lie, scheme, attempt to frame those who are innocent, and murder the townspeople suspicious of them.

The game ends when the townspeople have lynched all the Mafia members (townspeople victory), or when the number of Mafia members equals the number of townspeople (Mafia victory). (special thanks to Savvy-Sauce and Mashi from Last Life for this overview as well as ideas for the rest of the topic)

SMBX's Mafia History
Mafia has been a historic part of SMBX forums running for around 5 years and 55 games until fading interest and inactivity caused it to shutdown. It has seen the days of IRC, Skype, and Discord Chat. During the forum's heyday of mafia, SMBX mafia branched out to different places, notably it was first hosted briefly on talkhaus by Eclipsed for two-three games. However, skype proved difficult to organize and run mafia games until a new service, Discord was found. Eclipsed would then again attempt to run smbx style mafia games with discord categories for the town, prior phases, mafia room, and other miscellaneous features, even implementing an anonymity bot at one point. This server would then run around for 22 games until Eclipsed decided to transfer ownership to Chikimiko, who then ran the next 8 games on the server. Eventually, this server also died out due to IRL life of the playerbase becoming more busy. However, recently Eclipsed has once again made a new server for mafia games for those interested to play. Currently, there are 15 all-star games mixed and re-balanced from Minigame Plaza and SMBX Forums upcoming. Check it out: https://discord.gg/JxBCGpb

Mafia 1 Log
Mafia 1 Actions

Player Analysis
Blues
ShadowStarX
- Good job maneuvering around the doctor death since you knew that doctor was dead, and buying the town inspection time
- You also set up a way to counterclaim Radiance without revealing yourself and also led to a set of two reliable townsperson
- You also helped set up the town alliance between AlexStarr and Wohlstand for end game
- Suggestion 1: Attempt to lay more low instead of being the leading force in the town (what mafia killed you for) for more inspection time
- Suggestion 2: Computerfan0 never claimed he was the vigilante publicly and you didn't call Radiance's lie out. I will refer to this as (*)
The Thwomp King
- Night 1 Death, which means it's a neutral rating. You did successfully heal someone during your time alive though.
Wohlstand
- This really isn't your fault really since English isn't your first language and as a result you thought you were a serial killer
- But from a game perspective it's not good to kill two towns people randomly as the vigilante
- You did make it up at the end where you changed how you were playing and gave more of a contribution to the game
- Also refer to (*)
Townspeople
AlexStarr
- You had a decent initial hunch on Radiance, which led to a chain of events that got him lynched
- You also helped the town to start an initial lynch on Sancles who turned up Red
- Moreover, you did a decent job as the mouthpiece of the town alliance and managed to align yourself with Wohl Let Game
- However, I feel like that you started overthinking at the end. The computerfan0 kill made sense
- I feel like you trapped yourself in this mindset endgame Multiple Layers of Thought
- Also refer to (*)
computerfan0
- You paying attention and declaring you never claimed vigilante nor supported the sheriff claim helped lead the town to lynch Radiance
Davide
- You had a last second snipevote after Sancles attempted to snipevote for a tied vote. That was the most unexpected action that happened and as a result you helped lynch of mafia member and cause the opposing faction to leave town
- Also refer to (*)
Sastar
- You took an early lead of the town and managed to make logical and compelling posts
- You died night 2, so there's really not much else that happened
Thehelmetguy52
- You acted like a mouthpiece and did your job sterring the conversation towards Radiance's false claim
- Also refer to (*)
FyreNova
- You were mostly inactive during the game, but started participating at the very end
- You had a really good call on Sancles as mafia and made a really good argument
- Then you had a questionable call on AlexStarr as mafia if you account for him taking out 3 red names
- Especially when there were five lynch targets day two and he voted a clear mafia instead of the other four
- Also refer to (*). Overall, an alright first game.
FlatKiwi
- You were just inactive and had virtually no impact on the game.
- Also refer to (*)
Saltlord
- You were active but just kind of there and was an early game kill
- Also refer to (*)
MECHDRAGON
- You should have paid more attention to the chat as not doing so changed the course of the game.
- You also voted for the person that the fake sheriff claim said was a blue.
- You singlehandedly saved a mafia member who then turned the vote on you.
- Also refer to (*)
Mafia
Sancles
- You did a good job with the info you had, and decided to narrow down on town threats and plausible blues
- You had decent calls figuring out who the vigilante was and was the main planner in the mafia conversations
- Also, you managed to prolong the time you had to live despite being inspected Red
- That snipevote was a good play, but there's no way you could've predicted the double snipe vote
- Also, before you died saying "didn't work" was a dead giveaway to mafia.
- You did snipe vote, but the goal is to make it as vague as possible.
Oshi
- You didn't necessarily lead the discussion in the mafia chat but had a vital role in mafia's success
- You decided to lay low in a middle ground where you were active and inactive enough to avoid suspicion if things went haywire
- Your kill options made sense at the end except for maybe killing AlexStarr would've been better since you knew Wohl could not shoot
- You also did a good job evading the a 2-1 vote on you the last phase of the game
Radiance
- Your inactivity caused AlexStarr to become sketchy of you early on which was a follow up on Sancles' 5 mafia suspects
- However, you also managed to pull the best play in the game by claiming sheriff shortly before phase change.
- It was a success and as a result you bought mafia valuable time that they clearly needed to win the game.

Best Plays of Mafia 1
1. Mad Scramble
- Sancles listed around five people who were inactive and could be targeted as a vote on day 2
- AlexStarr used his hunch, voted initially, and led the charge against Radiance
- Radiance, brewing in thought, came up with a last minute scramble idea
- Radiance claimed sheriff 1 hour before phase change causing confusion and panic within the town
- Radiance also claimed computerfan0 was vigilante, which only computerfan0 counterclaimed later
- Ten minutes before phase change, MECHDRAGON appeared and RNGe'd computerfan0 as the lynch target
- Other people RNGe'd a lynch target and it landed on MECHDRAGON, which is ironic
- You successfully lynched the person who literally saved you as a mafia member
2. The Double Snipe Vote
- ShadowStarX inspected Sancles Night 1 and found that she was red
- ShadowStarX inspected thehelmetguy52 Night 2 and found that he was green
- Radiance fake claimed sheriff near the end of Day 2 in a bid to save himself
- ShadowStarX told thehelmetguy52 to act as a mouthpiece and counter Radiance
- Thehelmetguy52 posted the information during Night 3 and mentioned Sancles was red
- Radiance was then lynched on Day 3 since computerfan0 exposed them for lying
- On Day 4, AlexStarr voted for Sancles as the only lead was Sancles was red
- One minute before phase change, Sancles snipevoted AlexStarr, making it a 1-1 vote
- Less than 30 seconds before phase change, Davide returned a snipevote on Sancles
- In all that craziness, Sancles' plot was foiled by on 2-1 vote on her.

Looks like the game has to be downscaled regardless if I join or not?

I don't think it has to be downscaled as we have 16 now, albeit you joining would further decrease the probability of needing a downscaling.

Why did I even bother saving Radiance. That is what I get for being busy that phase only to see a Sherif claim. Hard to counterclaim ten minutes before a phase change though.

I mean I can list you as a backup. If the first backup says no it just goes down the backup queue.

Mafia 2 Logs
Mafia 2 Actions

Player Analysis
Blues
Sancles
- First off, props to you for pretending that you were not doctor throughout the game
- Moreover, you revealed yourself as the second mouthpiece of the alliance and helped in lynching both orange roles of Oshi and FlatKiwi
- Also, you were virtually the main force in the town alliance planning things
- Your heal targets throughout the game were pretty good, and I’ll explain why
- Night one, you predicted both mafia and sk did not want to risk a soulmate heal so you bluffed and healed a talkative player
- Night two, you thought the target might turn back to soulmates so you healed Gummy, the SK just outsmarted you and killed zero instead
- Night three, you’ve attempted the bluff again but the SK basically outread you and killed Gummy. Also fun fact, mafia switched last second off of TayCamGame, the sheriff who was your heal target, so that would have been a sound choice
- Night four, you correctly predicted that you would need to use your self-heal and had perfect timing
- Night five, you basically healed the most vital person in the alliance which was TayCamGame
- Before you died, you basically helped set stuff up for town alliance during endgame
- Also, you mentioned swapping sheriff and doctor roles around, which was never executed. However, later in the game it was used with the vigilante and sheriff instead during the last phases.
- Also all hunches while some were inaccurate, had sound reasoning for them
Davide
- You did a good job pretending that you were not vigilante throughout the game
- You did helped participate in town alliance discussions every so often
- You shot alex when he was being shady with no basis, which was a good decision
- Your other kill target was basically a consensus from town alliance
- As with TayCam, I’d say there was a minor few hiccups in your game
- Also great job, shifting the vote to helmet in dms on day 5 and buying town more time
- Also, good job swapping roles with TayCam and just following along
TayCamGame
- You did a good job pretending that you were not sheriff throughout the game
- You also helped participate in the town alliance discussions every so often
- However, I do think there are a few minor slipups in your game
- Also during the final day you seem to have given up blueness too accidentally
- During the switcheroo, I thought you made it too obvious by asking “You are sheriff aren’t you?”
- Moreover, the snipe vote wasn’t necessary on helmet as timezone differences and could have easily gone wrong.
- Also, fyre made it a bit too obvious he was vengeful, you could have lynched SAStar day 6 and then lynched fire next
- Also, good job attempting pulling off a switcheroo at the end. However, I thought you made it too obvious by saying things such as “You are the sheriff aren’t you?”
- Also, you slipped up saying you got an inspection result from Sanct the day she died
Hatster
- Night 1 Death, which means it's a neutral rating. You virtually could not have any impact on the game.
Townspeople
computerfan0
- You were active in the game which is a positive and showed that you were alive
- However, you had zero impact on the game for the majority of the game
- In the end, you pulled off a move which convinced SAStar to kill vin by lying that you’d vote the other to each other
- Also, good job deciding to play it safe and just vote for SAStar at the end
GummyLeeches
- You did what you were supposed to do as your role and claimed soulmate
- You also participated in the town alliance discussions every now and then
- However, I would’ve waited until night 1 for the soulmates to claim
Oshi
- You weren’t inactive which is a plus, and contributed to the discussion
- You weren’t super active but that’s acceptable since you still paid attention
- You also pointed out that lynching you would help narrow down SK
Saltlord
- You were fairly active throughout the game and contributed to general discussions
- You also voted and correctly stated that the vig should not claim to DawnFire
- You also made a defense for yourself and correctly assessed why SAStar was mafia
ShadowStarX
- You did a good job setting up the initial stages of the game by creating a plan for the soulmates to claim
- You also acted as the town lead for a while, which probably helped delay a blue kill
The Thwomp King
- You were active and participated in the main discussions of the game
- You also were the first person to push the vigilante to claim to Gummy
- Instead of having a vigilante claim to AlexStarr who had no basis that game
Zero
- You did what you were supposed to do as your role and confirmed Gummy as soulmate
- There wasn't really another chance to do much since you died night 2
AlexStarr
- Upside is that you successfully pinpointed two out of four mafia (4Matsy and FyreNova)
- However, the vig claiming to as a bait was a good idea but executed poorly
- First off, you had no basis in which town could trust you as you were not blue nor were you pivotal in eliminating any reds
- Secondly, the way you were pushing for it was really shady and caused the vig to shoot you.
MECHDRAGON
- You were active and virtually had zero impact on the game, which would be fine
- If you were a newer player of mafia, please have more of an impact on the game next time
Vincyclic
- This leans more towards red than green, but it’s a lenient rating since first-time-player
- You were kind of active in the game which is a positive and showed that you were alive
- You didn’t even respond to any direct messages that were talking about the game
- However, you had zero impact on the game in either a negative or positive way
Wohlstand
- This is your second game, and your virtually said nothing all game
- The only thing you did was vote for Oshi after the lynch and then died
Mafia And Third Party
Flatkiwi
- This rating is closer to a blue than an orange, but it doesn’t reach out of green
- You did a very good job with your kill targets throughout the game
- SAStar was probably a person to watch out for and decided to kill him
- You also killed both of the soulmates, killing zero night two due to less likely protection
- You also called out the doctor’s bluff on night three and decided to kill Gummy based on what happened on night one
- You managed to escape suspicion to reach day 4, but that wasn’t long enough.
Fyrenova
- You did a good job of pretending you were not the vengeful mafioso role
- You contributed to your team discussions and decided to have feedback for various plans
- Also, saving your role for the endgame was a very good choice but not needed this game
- Moreover, you managed to avoid suspicion throughout the whole game
- You basically had sheriff killed with a last minute play of getting lynched
- Only issue is not asking helmet to vote the phase that he was voted for
SAStar
- So day one, ShadowStar announced to the other players that he thought you were likely town
- You did a good job on capitalizing on this one mistake and running throughout the game without suspect
- You also contributed to the mafia chat discussion and created plans that made sense but had no fruition due to other factors
- You also did a good job at analyzing the best choice during endgame for who to lynch
- I will say that you might have nudged toward the computerfan0 vote too early and your timing for that was off.
- You made the issue of not remembering to ask helmet to vote, which wasn’t great
- Also, I feel like at endgame you got pretty frustrated and it clouded your judgement then
- There was clearly something off with how the blues were talking and you almost pinpointed it
- Also, bussing fyrenova last phase could have gone very wrong since he was on no one’s suspects list and you were clearly red that phase. It also delays mafia victory by one cycle.
- Killing vin because you thought compfan0 was going to lynch saltlord was fine as you did not want to rely on a KITB.
- Very good job nearly salvaging victory at the very end, shame that you couldn’t close it out. Also, I respect that you wanted to rely on skill at the end game instead of a 50-50 coin flip. In that case, I feel like just deciding not to kill and frame vincyclic would have been the option.
- You had a super dominant early to mid game, but your late game had issues.
TheHelmetGuy
- You needed to act more active in town chat, since it narrowed down to you at the end
- However, you did a really an alright job with providing feedback in the mafia chat
- You helped prevent other mafia members from acting too rashly with hasty plans
- However, you not voting on day-5 after pinged 4-5 times, while you talked in town chat, single-handedly cost mafia the game
4matsy
- You were too inactive in town chat, which would be an orange rating for a first-time player playing the game
- However, when accused you did not even try to have self-defense and talked about unrelated topics.

Best Plays of Mafia 2
1. Your player uses knives, they must be a serial killer or doctor (Sancles and FlatKiwi)
- ShadowStarX said Doublevoter or Soulmates should claim for a town alliance to start up
- Gummyleeches did not read the on day 1 part and claimed night one instead
- Zero then verified GummyLeeches' claim that they were the soulmate
- Everyone in the chat was asking the doctor to heal the soulmates
- Serial Killer and Mafia did not want to risk a failed kill on night 1
- Sancles realized that and instead healed a talkative player instead, successfully SAStar
- On day 1, TayCamGame set up a town alliance with Sbells' inspection Sancles
- On night 2, the blues added the soulmates to the town alliance group dm.
- Sancles thought the soulmates would be attacked after seeing the doctor heal
- She was right on that, but Flatkiwi thought the less active soulmate would not be healed
- Thereby, Flatkiwi outmaneuvered Sancles and successfully killed zero
- On day 2, DawnFire claimed that he thought TayCamGame and FyreNova were working together
- On night 3, after Zero was killed the town kept asking doctor to heal GummyLeeches
- Sancles attempted to pull the night one bluff again to heal sheriff, TayCamGame
- In fact mafia's original target was TayCamGame, so that was the right option
- SAStar switched it to Thwomp King to consider framing TayCam based on DawnFire's final words
- FlatKiwi realized the night 3 situation was similar to the night 1 situation and decided to kill GummyLeeches
- On day 3, Sancles claimed that Oshi was orange and that she, herself was blue
- As a result, mafia attempted killing Sancles, but that night it was using a self-heal
2. ComputerFan Whispers
- On Day 6, TayCamGame revealed SAStar was red, and he ended up living
- Instead, FyreNova and TayCam were both killed that phase using vengeful mafioso
- Night 7, computerfan0 told SAStar he suspected Saltlord and Saltlord he suspected SAStar
- SInce SAStar did not like KITB’s he decided to kill Vincyclic and work from there on Day 7
- Therefore computerfan0 lying to both of them allowed the town to lynch SAStar at the end

Lel it must have been so confusing for SAStar and Saltlord when they heard that I was the godfather.
Only for it to have been a prank.

Nah, not in my case. Eclipsed said in dead chat that he was gonna make that false announcement and asked people to go along with the meme.

Salt on the other hand...yeah, I bet he was baffled.

Mafia 3 Logs
Mafia 3 Actions

Player Analysis
Blues
Radiance
- Good job setting up the town alliance early in the game and using it to lynch the remaining mafia
- Nice job figuring out a way to confirm both blue claims using the lookout role
- Moreover, you had a lot of info and used it in the way you were supposed to at the end
- Also, it was a good decision to leave the backup roles in the dark because of bartender
- Moreover, revealing all of the claims to confirmed town-sided decisions was optimal
- However, I have a couple of criticisms of your game, and the first of which is:
- Why the heck did you think that mafia would kill one of their own teammates night 1
- You should not have said that nurse has not claimed in public chat, that gave mafia a plan for using the bartender. Instead something better would’ve been I have not received a blue claim.
Saltlord
- Good job pointing out that mafia killing their own member night one is not the right move, especially since it would be someone who’d be entirely against dying from their own team night 1
- Also, you did your role of healing Radiance in the game and claiming to him early
- Other than that, there really isn’t much going on with your analysis this game.
TheHelmetGuy
- Good job pointing out that mafia killing their own member night one is not the right move, especially since it would be someone who’d be entirely against dying from their own team night 1
- Also, you did your role in the town alliance and confirmed various blue claims for Radiance
- Also, you nailed a suspicion on TayCam near the end of the game so good job
The Thwomp King
- You did not make yourself needlessly suspicious at all which was a good start
- Moreover, you claimed to Radiance and wanted to move the discussion along in whispers
- You just were not given the opportunity to make an impact on the game so there’s that
FyreNova
- Firstly, you did not claim to Radiance right away out of fear of him being a bartender. While I personally don’t agree with it, this move is reasonable.
- It however did delay using lookout power for one night, but this move is passable
- What did not make sense however was the fact you abstained from protecting someone when there was still an orange role alive
- Moreover after both oranges died, you gave MECHDRAGON, a player you had no info about volunteer firefighter. Which meant the bartender received visiting powers.
Hatster
- This is your first game, so it’s a more lenient analysis, but this rating is still red
- If you responded when you were being lynched this would be orange.
- Moreover, you did not consider claiming at all when Radiance asked for claims

Townspeople
computerfan0
- I feel like you were just kind of there this game and that’s about it
- You also randomly claimed to Radiance you were townsperson out of the blue
Dawnfire
- Good job pointing out to that mafia could be asking incinerator to abstain into consideration
- You died pretty early, when not much was going on so this rating is also neutral
- Also, you tried to prevent Zero from being lynched after the phase change was over
Flatkiwi
- Night 1 Death, which means it's a neutral rating. You virtually could not have any impact on the game.
LGLMaking
- This was your first game so I appreciate the effort on being active
- You were just there which means you had a neutral impact on the game
Sancles
- Night 1 Death, which means it's a neutral rating. You virtually could not have any impact on the game.
SAStar
- Good job pointing out to the sheriff that they can align with any greens but not any blues
- Also, pointing out what situations mafia would take that’d put them at high risk
- Unfortunately, you died night 2 and could not contribute a lot to the game so it’s neutral.
TheNewGuy
- You said in the chat directly that you were not motivated to play as townsperson
- Which is in all honestly, kind of not that respectful and hindered the town
- In the end you basically just gave up which is not good gameplay
Zero
- This is your second game, and your virtually said nothing all game.
- This includes not defending yourself when you were having votes piled on you

Mafia
David
- You did an alright job of contributing to mafia discussion in the chatroom for the game
- You also did a pretty nice job of evading suspicion throughout the entire game.
- You were just kind of screwed over from easy town process of elimination
MECHDRAGON
- There was absolutely no point in talking to SAStar and interrogating him night 1
- Also, thankfully you disputed the decision to have you do the kills later in the game
- Moreover, you had a really good idea to claim nurse and use VF powers to fake doctor later
- Overall, you did alright, mafia overall just kind of became unlucky at the start and end of the game.
ShadowStarX
- You got inspected night 1 and you were orange as a role there, so you have a neutral rating
- You did what you could in this game, but you virtually had little to no impact on the game
TayCamGame
- In town chat after Radiance was confirmed sheriff, you kept pushing for him to tell you his investigations. This instantly put a suspicion target onto you by members of the town alliance due to it being too pushy
- Also, you told bartender, the most valuable mafia role left to do the kill. And when Mech asked but what about the lookout you respond “Don’t worry about it”

Best Plays of Mafia 3
None, this was trainwreck and nothing really stood out that wasn’t usual gameplay.

I also had a bit of an issue with this as well.
