I've seen it done a lot, and yet I have no idea how it's done.

So you main point of making this post is : How to make recolored graphics?
If so, I recommend using Paint.NET to do so. Also, you need a palette sheet to help you recolor things more nicely.
Firstly, use the color picker in paint.net to pick one from the palette sheet, then use the color bucket to color the parts you want to be colored into SMB1/SMB2/SMB3/SMW etc versions.

you use pdn (Paint.NET) to open the .gif of said sprite/tile/block/npc/whatever the hell it is
move tolerance to 0%
set fill option to global
use fill
select yo colors

I know all of this. How do I then get it to not overwrite the global colors?

Alright, got it sorted out on CaffieNET. So this can be locked/trashed.

yeah it's not like LM, it won't overwrite other sprite's palettes
glad you got it worked out though

Well LM can do level-specific colorsets, too, and that can be emulated in SMBX with level-specific tilesets. *cough*ExGFX*cough*

Mind, the flip side of this is that you'll need to say, recolor every single tile in a tileset. Think you can handle it?

Adobe Fireworks changes color palettes.

Please don't bump old topics in the future.
For example if you were modifying NPC 1 you'd have black on the transparent parts of npc-1.gif and white on the transparent parts of npc-1m.gif. It's also much easier just to use .png files which support transparency and don't require a mask
