There are two stupid actors in this game, actually. The first actor is Nintendo, who is "against social commentary", but at the same time admits that gay/lesbian marriage was disallowed in the original Japanese release. The second actor is the person or group that created the petition, because they're clearly against gay or lesbian marriage and I think everyone should love and marry the gender they want to love and marry.

I thought the petition was created pro-gay marriage?

Pro-gay? Whoops, I guess I didn't read the entire thing, I just skimmed the article. Sorry.
In that case, though: Instead of admitting their mistake and apologizing for it and even saying that it would be the same in non-Japan regions, why don't they simply release an update?

because the way tomodachi life is designed simply updating the game with gay marriage isn't a viable option?

They aren't releasing "gay videos". In fact the controversy is that they AREN'T including gay relationships in one of their life simulators.

Yeah OK I just lost a little more respect for Nintendo. That ain't cool.

It would probably only take changing a couple of lines of code to make gay marriage possible. They have no real reason not to make it possible.

You actually have no idea how game design works, do you? Adding gay marriage to something like Tomodachi Life isn't a matter of simply "changing a few lines of code". You would have to change how the game works at its core. Your ignorance in regards to how programming and game design work is astounding.

It wouldn't, though. I'd presume that you are restricted from marrying/dating characters deemed the opposite gender. I doubt it'd be that hard to remove a restriction like that.

That was definitely an exaggeration, though. I'm not really that ignorant and I apologize for sounding like an arrogant douchebag.

Fully supporting Nintendo here. Not only is it too late to modify the game like this, but saying "Nintendo not adding homosexuality is social commentary in itself because the game is about relationships" is incorrect as well. Not supporting gay marriage isn't social commentary - social commentary would be "we hate gay marriage".

Yes, they absolutely do. If I had to guess, they don't want to be like "hey look at us we support gay marriage!", so they didn't pay much mind to it. It's not like they said "we hate gay marriage", they just don't want to make social commentary so they didn't go one way or the other and just did things like they normally would.

That article is pretty biased. They didn't respond terribly at all - they did so diplomatically with something that makes sense.

qig could be a little nicer with his posts.

But there's more than simply removing a restriction. A large part of the game is built around straight marriages. People get married, the female gets pregnant and a child is had. While it wouldn't be impossible for gay marriages to work within the context of the game, things would clearly have to be changed. New graphics, cutscenes, UI elements and more would have to be developed to accommodate the changes. It would likely take months of development and Q&A before the game would be ready for release, and doing all of that for a game that may or may not be successful, seems unlikely.

Yeah, I suppose that's true. Upon hearing more about this, my opinion is starting to change. We really can't expect them to change it at this point. If the game gets a sequel, I hope they do include such an option but I understand why it's not in this game. Again, I apologize for being an arrogant douchebag earlier.
