Mine is the Penguin Suit in 38A.

Tanooki Suit and Starman

as I said in previous topics, Ice flower (except for 38A).

also how can the leaf be a favorite when the tanooki suit gives you all abilities of the leaf and more

Let's just say, I never gotten really far in the original SMB3, and plus, I couldn't keep the Tanooki suit for more than about 10 seconds in the original game tbh

I like the Ice Flower for powerups and the Lakitu's Shoe for an add-on type.

Toad with a fire flower. Great for speeding the level if it is flat.

I'd pick the Ice Flower in the General and the Tanooki Suit with Toad due his double jump ability.

The optimal powerup in that case is an Ice Flower

I actually don't like the additional powerups in 38A.

Blue Shell / Penguin Suit: I died endlessly many times from riding / sliding into a pit. This is nowhere a benefit if you play levels blind (most of them don't give you good occasions anyway). When having a blue shell you're basically forbidden to run, otherwise you start riding and the game also doesn't let you end your ride easily. They're also weaker than in the original games, i.e. you can kill less enemies and get hurt yourself easier. The only real benefit of the penguin suit is swimming in water, however that physic can also be tricky to handle.
Oh and also the ice flower loses plenty of its appeal compared to 1.3/2.0 because of the changed scoring system.

Frog Suit: totally garbage. The penguin suit gives you the same effect underwater.

Propeller Mushroom: I like this one the most out of the mentioned, but the gliding angle is really short (even shorter than Toad's / Peach's leaf glide)

Mega Mushroom: it sucks that it takes away your power-up. Sometimes it's also written into your inventory.
