Mario and the Rift (SM3 Editable remake)

Mario and the Rift is an episode I made mostly out of boredom and is a remake of a very old fan game from 2003 known as Super Mario 3 Editable, which was basically a Spanish Mario fan game that let you create your own levels. It came with about 9 worlds worth of sample levels, each varying in length and quality. The game was buggy, lacked a lot of commonplace Mario features like bosses and is no longer being worked on, so I took it upon myself to recreate the game's levels and add a few original ones by me as well as a simple (though probably rather cheesy) story.

I was hesitant about uploading this because recreating these levels as closely as possible and keeping them in the same order meant there are some glaring difficulty spikes early on and the levels being very reminiscent of SMB3's levels, as well as some sections where I had to add in some deliberate cutoff regarding tile placement, so if that isn't your cup of tea, I completely understand if you want to give this episode a pass.

I don't expect this to become popular, but I thought I'd give sharing it here a shot.

This was still made in 1.3.0.1, but it works in 2.0 as well.

Plot:
Spoiler: show
For this plot to make sense, the story takes place in an alternate reality where the Mario & Luigi RPG games never happened. Bowser has found a powerful artifact known as the Cobalt Star, which has time and space altering properties. Bowser used the Cobalt Star's power as fuel for a beam cannon to completely alter the Mushroom Kingdom to his own liking and afterwards kidnaps Princess Peach. Bowser's abuse of the star's power has also torn a rift into the fabric of space. It's up to Mario, Luigi and Toad to defeat Bowser and hopefully close this rift.

It's kinda nice imo that some of the SMBX community members are making SMBX episodes based off old and forgotten Mario fan games.

^^"

Yeah, I think so too. It's always nice when something that'd otherwise be completely forgotten about gets some attention like this. Not to mention the possible boost in quality it can get. :)

Of course you're kinda restricted to the original level design for the most part, but I can certainly be creative and come up with my own stuff as well. If I ever create another episode, I'll make my own original creations instead.

I really like the screenshots. They remind me of SMB3 very much, both in graphics and level design.

I'm glad you think so! I mean, obviously it looks a lot like SMB3 due to reasons stated earlier, but I'm glad you like it. ^^

Huh. Maybe this was a good idea after all.

Wait I just realised. This was based on a fangame where you could create your own levels. But it's remade in another fangame that also lets you create your own levels.

Nice.

And then remake that remake in Mario Builder or Mario Editor.

Heh. Remake-ception.

Anyways, I'd say challenge accepted, but there's stuff you can do in Super Mario Maker that can't be done in SMBX yet, so yeah. I don't know.

Perhaps a later version of SMBX 2.0 would add some of the Mario Maker stuff.

They already have a few Mario Maker assets added, so hopefully they continue to add some more.

Back to the episode, I'll give it a try. It looks fun and simple enough. Also, you should add more screenshots to help give a better idea of what the episode has to offer.

Yeah, come to think of it, one blog post demonstrated the springboards working like they do in Super Mario Maker as well as the bumper objects being a thing. Yeah, I think we'll see more from that game yet.

Nice to hear you're willing to give it a try. And I was considering adding more screenshots when I first posted this, but I was afraid I'd end up spoiling too much, so that's why I've only added this many.

IMO you could have added at least 2-3 more screenshots and it would have been enough.

The screenshot rule exists exactly for the purpose of spoilering, so that shouldn't be your worry.

Well, you're definitely not wrong. Not to mention that's probably why the spoiler tag exists. Silly me.

Anyways, I followed Eri7's advice and added three more screenshots. Thanks for that, by the way. :)

I thought spoilers for screenshots existed to not clutter up the introduction of the episode.

Yeah, I thought those as well. I tried not to spoil anything in the new screenshots though.

I don't think spoiling screenshots would be too big of a problem. If you don't upload screenshots which would potentially spoil the episode, you should be fine.
