Fuyu's Winter Goodness That Can Be Mitigated By Putting On More Clothes (Leaf Powerup Update!)

Yes, that title is random. No, my ego is not as big as the empire state. And yes, that title was needed.

Late Visitor

Introduction: show
I got back into SMBX this weekend and decided to make some levels. One of which is a first for me, a night-beach level. This is currently the first episode of my upcoming project with no name so far (and actually on hiatus as of 16/11/2020). The level does have a name though, and that is Late Visitor, and I guess a quick summary of the plot is in order since the name can be confusing.

Mario finds himself on an island with no recollection of how he got there. As he stands on his feet, he sees a cave not very far, he decides to venture into said cave for the time being, seeing as it'll be much more safer in there and outside.

I intentionally left some parts of the level out for you guys to find on your own. While not much, I think it's the least I can do when uploading a level to be played by others. Enjoy!

Walljump Nightmares Redux

Introduction: show
It is time to cleanse the worst stain of my entire level designing career. Walljump Nightmares was originally created to force MECHDRAGON777 to give my level the highest score in difficulty, which looking back I have no idea why I wanted to do that. As a result most of the difficulty from that level came from really bad design choices, bullshit scenarios and altogether unfun challenges. Since that monstrosity is staring me in the face whenever I think of making a hard level I've come to the conclusion it is time to make things right. Hence here I present the definitive version of Walljump Nightmares, the only version that is worthwhile playing.

Now, I realize some people may consider this level to be too easy compared to the original, and trust me, I have set up some gamemodes to spice things up. These gamemodes are Deathless and Reverse, both accesible by typing the cheat codes ihatemyself and backwardsrave. These gamemodes are of course optional and should you consider the normal mode hard enough I invite you to stop there and look for other levels.

With that said, here goes nothing.

Maddening Macrocosm (CCX1 1st Place)

Introduction: show
I literally had nothing in mind when I signed for CCX1. I've been away from the forums for a while too, playing very few games and really not being active anywhere else except with my friends. I've gone through quite a lot of ideas before deciding to make this one, as some people may recall from my gifs on the CCX1 channels. Once I've decided to make MM though ideas began to pour on my head like crazy and felt I had to go through with it. Most concepts in here were planned, some came out of my ass in the spur of the moment, like the easter egg. All I can say is that while I expected to get the highest score I've ever received in any contest I did not expect to win.

The contest also housed some strong competition too which made me doubt I would get first place, and honestly, all I cared about was getting higher than 21st which up until now was the best score I've ever got. I can finally feel proud of myself thanks to this and believe I can make new content as good as this or better in the future, so keep an eye out for it ;)

So I got inspired to make this from a SMM2 level. Looking back this one may pale in comparison, but I don't care.

Nice level. I love the constant water at the bottom.

Seems like the first half has more content than the second half. I think even just counting necessary screens we're looking at 10-ish vs 3-ish?
Nice-sounding music btw.

I love the attention to details in this level from the pipe bgos, to the waterfalls to the HUD elements and everything else.
Outside of good aesthetics, i don't think the level did something interesting with its gimmicks, the level feels like your typical mario level with good aesthetics however the gimmicks aren't utilized to their full potential.
So in short, good aesthetics, mediocre usage of your gimmicks and imo fun gameplay for a typical mario level.

That is bothering me too. I'll see what I can do to fix the issue, removing the checkpoint or extending the level length.

I would start by moving the checkpoint left a little. At least to before the powerups. Extending the cave section with a final gauntlet-type setup should take care of the rest. (platforming over some moving platforms where a failure state sends you into the water and forces a retry maybe?)

I don't know how much of an opportunity for secret areas there is in the 2nd half, but the classic 1-up-after-swimming-under-the-section-boundaries-in-the-water might be an easy-to-apply secret.

New challenger incoming! Walljump Nightmares was added to the main post.

Added in 1 hour 22 minutes 50 seconds:
During editing I left the last section musicless. I have updated the download file, but for those who have the old one, the music is SMB2 Boss.

Added in 5 hours 57 minutes 59 seconds:
Alright people! Final Update for the Walljump Nightmares level is here. Added an easy mode for casual players to actually have a chance as well as new modes for those who truly hate themselves. Notice that these modes only add checkpoints, the obstacles overall do not change.

Oh wow! That was perfect! While not on purpose I can only imagine how fun it would have been to witness somebody go through that.

My bad, with the updates and talking on Discord I must have had my links mixed up. The download link is up and running now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

You have to play it on SMBX 2.0, and to reach the top section you have to enter the pipe that goes all the way up and use the platforms.

Ok, I see the problem. But I don't think to fix it now is worth the effort. I'm working on another level plus some cutscenes, you guys will be able to play the level then, without this issue. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Speaking of that, I gave it the second highest rating at the time.

Are you using Enjl's anotherwalljump.lua now? Because the old walljump script was more jank

No, I'm using the old one. Enjl's walljump is nice but I don't like how it forces the player to walljump off a wall in front of you if you wanna go higher. The walljump code I'm using is more akin to that of Super Meat Boy.

Also, here's a hotfix. Appearently deathless wasn't working properly so here's hopefully the final version. Videos coming soon.
